1969 Z/28 open element air cleaner lid
« on: November 24, 2009, 03:02:35 AM »
http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=138997&page=22

The attached page has 2 different messages on the underside of the lid. Anyone know why the diffrence. The message on the rechromed lid is from a barn find Z/28. The one I posted is one I bought thinking it was an original.

You sure that's the right thread?  All I say was tires and a spoiler.

I realized it depends on how my display is set up. Sorry. It probably is p.58.

I attached the two pctures in question. Which one is correct for a 1969 Z/28? Were the filters really oiled?

Yes. The production-line A212CW filter element paper was "oil-wetted" (that's what the "W" originally stood for), which is why the paper appears yellowish. Later service replacement A212CW elements were not, and had "white" paper. Photo below shows an un-used original 1967-vintage A212CW element with the "yellowish" paper.

To the best of my knowledge no 1969 Z/28 came with a PCV valve.  So the air cleaner lid with the notation about positive crankcase ventilation would be incorrect for a Z/28 302.  If I am wrong about this I'm sure other more knowledgable posters will correct me.  I want to learn as much as I can about first gen Z/28's as I own a 1969 Z/28 RS with original engine and darn if I can find a PCV valve anywhere on it.

Forget what I said.  I was incorrect.  I was thinking of another engine in one of my cars that didn't have a PCV valve.  Sorry.

John, which stenciled message is correct for 1969 in the pictures I posted? What does your air cleaner lid say?

I have a chrome air cleaner I bought in 1984, which was supposed to be off of a March build Z-28 ( as the story goes at least) and it has the oiled filter silk screening. This of course is dependent on wether I was told the truth back in '84!

1967-69 Air Cleaner service instruction silkscreen lables are curved, starting in 1970 the label is straight with changes to the wording.

The pic below is the correct original label used on 67-69 Camaro Chevelle Nova and Corvette, this label is on an enclosed air cleaner
with a chrome lid from an all original 1969 L36 427 Impala built January 1969 4th week.

The first two words are missing on the first line which should read "AIR FILTER" followed by "SERVICE INSTRUCTION"

This car belongs to a friend who bought it from the original owner 15 years ago.
