Restoring Inside Raer View Mirror
« on: October 19, 2009, 02:17:11 AM »
I have seen some "restored" Inside rear view mirrors for Sale.   They talk about the Glass being "resilvered", does anyone here know of a place that does this service?   My original mirror is in good shape, except for the plating.  Thanks!

Try Paragon - they've been restoring mirrors for decades.

Restore your original.  They are stamped "USA" on the bottom and the repros are not.  Points deducted for repro mirrors.

That sounds great, but how did you replace the glass in the housing?

How do you get the glass into the "rubber" trim. Seems like it is a little too stiff.

I tried to get the rubber trim off mine but I couldn't.  I didn't want to break it.  It's not as pliable as when it was new.  So I've just left my original mirror alone, even though it needs to be re-silvered.

Mine was still pretty pliable.  I ran a small flat screwdriver around the edge of the glass.  VERY CAREFULLY.  I started across the bottom and worked my way up the sides. There is only a small lip there.  Once you are most of the way up the sides, you will be able to just pull the top out. I didn't try to take the Gray rubber out of the housing.  I never found a way to do that, and in the end, I didn't have to.  To put it back together I just did the reverse, using a Popsickle stick so as not to scratch the Glass.  I am attaching a photo of finished project.(Not the best color)

Put it in hot water to soften prior to removal.

I was asked to repost these pics. so here goes.  Note the GLARE PROOF on top, and the MADE IN    USA on the bottom.  These stamps are not on the repros.

Do all mirrors have the gray trim or are they color coordinated to the interior?
Thanks for the pictures.
