69 x33 console delete?
« on: September 04, 2009, 12:17:04 AM »
Hello,

I have used this forum for many of my questions regarding my 69 x33 z28 restoration project, but have run across something that I need help with. While the answer may be obvious to you folks, here's my question:
I have no console plug in my main dash harness!! the harness is complete and intack except a pink, light green, black and yellow wire. while I am unsure yet where they go, am sure they don't feed the console. all the 69 z28's i have seen have consoles in them. I have the dash tach with the center fuel gauge. was there such a thing as a console delete for my car or is this quite common or am I just overlooking something obvious?

Thanks,

Jon

A console [or a radio] was not standard equipment in any 1st gen Camaro. The only 'delete' option was a heater for 67-68.

So there is no radio or console delete; if the car does not have it they were not ordered.

Pink and green sound like reverse light circuit. I bet you do not have any reverse lights when you back up. That is probably due to a header install at some time in the past 40 years or so.

Thanks Mark, yes it did have headers. I was confused at the lack of a console plug which according to william was not that uncommon for the z28 in 69.

Thanks again for your help!!

Not that uncommon for Z28s built before Mid May of 69.  After that they all had them, because the guages and spoilers were made mandatory options on Z's

Incorrect.

Spoilers were included with the Z/28 option as of April '69 and price of the option was raised $32.65. They no longer appear on documentation. A tachometer [or special instrumentation] became a required option with Z/28 equipment as of the April '69 dealer ordering info. Plenty of tach-only Z/28s with no console out there. There is a window sticker in JMs book [page 119] of a November '69 built Z/28 so equipped.

I have an X77 05C (May 3rd week) with factory spoiler, no D80 on TT, without console/gauges or dash tachometer. Would this mean it was dealer ordered before April 69?

Probably.

I have paperwork from a local dealer that had about 100 '69s. What seems to have ocurred with hot selling cars is orders remained in queue with no response from the factory for some time. When they were eventually confirmed a number was assigned to the order and later stamped on the body tag. The 'BDY' numbers were assigned sequentially just like VINs so it is possible to accurately determine that date. But it does not reveal when the dealer actually placed the order. For example in JMs book there is a shipper copy for Z/28 N584728 body #226652. The car was ordered October 19, 1968, not confirmed until December 11 and finally built the 3rd week of January 1969. Also this dealer did not order any Camaros at all during April indicating some sort of problem; probably too many orders. There were no Norwood 04A or 04B builds. The body tag number had nothing to do with scheduling production.

D80 did not appear on tags at the time your car was built.

Look for the bolt screw in rivit on the trans tunnel,if there isnt a place for the console bolt to screw in on the trans tunnel its possible the console wasnt installed in your car.I have seen some 4 speed C.O.P.O. camaros without a console. It is possible the console was an option at the time your car was built.

A console was always an option in a 1st gen Camaro. Most 4-speed COPOs did not have one.

I have an 04C 69Z with no Tach, guages. So it has to be later that the Tach/guage package became standard.

The 4 guage pack in the console with combined with Tach and Clock was allways optional.

After about May 19th, 1969 all '69 Z/28's had to have a Tach and Center Fuel Guage at a minimum OR they could order the Full 4 Gauge on the console with Tach and Clock.

So an early build did not have to have any extra instrumentation but a late build would have to have a tach via one of the two possible combinations.
