1968 SS 350 power steering and water pump
« on: June 16, 2009, 11:20:14 PM »
I'm having some issues restoring my cars engine.  I want to do it as it came from the factory, with correct brackets and such.  I had a long water pump on just to make it run, but when i bought a short one from a local parts store, it did'nt have a 3rd hole on the drivers side for power steering bracket mounting like the long pump did. I may have the wrong pwr steering brackets on, but i dont know.  where does it attach to the engine.  Do i have the wrong water pump or wrong power steering brackets.  where can i find a blown up image of the engine assembly.  any help is appreciated

The information you're looking for is in the A.I.M. (Assembly Instruction Manual), under the N40 option. You can get one for around $20.00 from any of the Camaro vendors.

got one, but the illustrations are'nt very detailed when it gets down to things like this.  I think they assume small blocks are so common we should know this.  I will take a second look though

The bracket attaches to the two front threaded holes on the block itself. The brace attaches to the motor mount and the pump sits in the cradle of the bracket and the adjustment is done through the slot in the brace. It sounds like you have the wrong parts because the 67-68 Camaro small block bracket doesn't attach to the water pump like the 69 does.

In the A.I.M. , upc N40 sheet A4, (page 373) make sure you are looking at "VIEW A" which is for the L48 (350).  If that picture isn't making sense to you, then I also think you have the wrong brackets.

The '68 SS 350 power steering pump mounting is the same as the '68 Z/28.  Both have 8" harmonic balancers.  These are the two brackets you need to mount the power steering pump...
