LOS/VNY 69 Z28 cowl paint
« on: June 08, 2009, 03:51:57 PM »
I recently saw an original paint Lemans blue L.A. Z28 with white stripes and the whole cowl area was white from the top edge of the firewall back. This appeared to include the windshield wiper linkage as well. This was a mid to late April car.
Jerry's book mentions white striped cars were painted white under the cowl grill.
My question is, would a January built L.A. dover white car with black stripes receive black paint under the cowl grill? Was the wiper linkage also painted?

Been repainted.  Wipers were not installed when the cowl was striped.  GM  (or at least other GMAD workers further down the same line at LA) installed those about a day after the cowl was painted.

Like I said, linkage "appeared" to be painted, can't say for sure. So, did black stripe cars receive the same treatment? What should the finish be on the wiper linkage?

The wiper linkage is always black - it was received painted black from the supplier, and was installed many hours after the Paint Shop; if it's any color other than black, the car has been repainted.

Thanks JohnZ, what do u know about the cowl area on a car that received black stripes? Mine was repainted so the cowl area including wiper linkage is white, it's a white car with black stripes.

Drove by a gentleman's house yesterday who is the original owner of a 2A L.A. built RS Z28, white with black stripes. He keeps it parked in the driveway since new, go figure. anyhow didn't appear to be home but peeked through his cowl grill and everything visible through the grills including wiper linkage was black. sort of faded since its stored outside. Pretty certain this car has never been repainted. I'll cruise by again soon to have him pop the hood and get a good peek.

The whole top of the cowl was painted black for black stripes. The paint "spilled" out from under the cowl panel. Evidently Norwood built cars had better control over cowl paint. Sometime after February (?) the paint was contained under the cowl panel better than before. Some cars exhibit this better than others I have seen pictures of. Down in the well under the wiper linkage was supposed to be painted black as well.

Dragging up an old thread.  Has there been any original paint Z's that had paint on their wiper linkage?

Original paint 09B LOS 1969 Z28 - even has narrow 68 style trunk stripes - in the wiper grille you can see the black linkage.
