Something fun for Saturday Chaparral 2E with Jim Hall
«

Thought some of you might like to see a piece of history in motion. Yesterday here in Midland,TX at the Chaparral Gallary, Jim Hall fired up the Chap 2E and took her for a spin. Not to be confused with the 2E continuation cars, this is the real deal.
If you ever find yourseld on I-20 about 350 miles west of Dallas, stop in and check out this world class collection of Chevy powered race cars.
Enjoy
Kris

Jim Hall still owns all of the Chaps, and they are based in the Permian Basin Petroleum musem, Chaparall Gallary.
Here's a link if you liked to look.

Here are a couple of the photos I took at Riverside in 1966 in Pit Lane.
I was working on Follmers T-70 and wanted to find out what Jim Hall was doing. I stood behind Phil's car when he started it. Push shifter forward and then back to find first, hit ign then starter with NO THROTTLE. It started and idled at about 600 rpm, he never reved it (No Netural !) and motored out of the pits sounding like a motoboat. I would sure like to see it again. I took a bunch of photos for a model company as Cox Models had the official rights.

Very Cool. I'll share these with my neighbor Ronnie. He is the guy helping Jim with the 2E in the garage. He's also the care taker/mechanic for the Chaps. If you ever make it out here, I'm sure I can get you an after hours pass to the Gallary.

Thanks for those pics, they are great to see. Did you see the ZL-1 Can Am engine?

I'll check with Ronnie to see if the engine is still installed.

This is another photo I took of the same car 43 years ago in the hot pits.
Similar photos are in the best book on these cars "Chaparral" by Richard Falconer

I spoke with Ronnie and the 2E has a small block chevy. The 2H and 2J both have ZL1 engines still in them.
Come on out and take a look.

DZ302 Chevy,
I've been asked to ask you if you would be willing to share your chap photos so that they could be placed in the Chap archives at the Chap Gallary?
If so, please email them to kkbotkin@grandecom.net
Thanks,
Kris

cool pictures and info
Have you asked Jim about work he did for Chevy in the 60s?
I have read that they did testing on cars and power train testing for Chevy on Jim's test track where it can be kept more secret.
Have read that Jim used some of Chevy's prototype transmissions on his race cars.

I'll ask Ronnie about the transmissions. He should know.
With regards to Jim's race track, it's still there. It's called Rattle Snake Raceway as much for the curves as the snakes. It was recently used for an article Road & Track did on Shelby's Terlingua Mustang a few months ago.
