Another 69 RS question

Is there any way to verify an RS is a true RS other than a build sheet?  It appears that it would have to be an x-33 instead of x-77 to include the RS trim.  I just hate to pay extra for an original RS due to its rarity if it is not verifiable.

There's nothing on a '69 cowl tag that will indicate whether or not the car had the RS package (which was available on anything, including 6-cylinder cars), and the X33 and X77 codes on a Z/28 have nothing to do with the RS package - they just indicate whether the car had the Z-21 Style Trim Group (X33) or not (X77). The only way to verify an RS car is to dig for presence of all the "clues".

But the original poster was correct. It's gotta be a X33 to be an RS. But John's point is an X33 doesn't prove an RS.

At least for the 1969 model year, I would look for the following - although the RS option is a trim package, it is a very elegant and complicated trim package.  The differences are many - the RS variations from the  "standard body" include:

different outer fenders, different inner fenders, different grille, hideaway headlights (based on vacuum actuated, articulating, headlight mounting bracket to rotate the headlight covers in and back in the open position), inner and outer headlight door covers, vacuum cannisters, mounting brackets for the vacuum cannisters, vacuum reservoir, relay valve and the associated vacuum lines, different headlight switch with vacuum hose connections, different windshield wiper switch (2 dentent positions, first detent routes water to the windshield washer nozzles, second detent routes water to the headlight washer nozzles which spray water on the headlights), headlight washer nozzles, diverter valve on the windshield washer pump, water tubing from the diverter valve to the headlight washers, and even a difference in the front header panel to accomodate the headlight washers themselves --- even down to the miniscule items like the bracket that holds the windshield washer bottle - it is different on a RS vs. a base coupe or a base coupe Z28.  And this doesn't include the Style Trim RPO items that are a part of RPO Z22, the RS package.

if the front end sheetmetal is missing check for punched back up light foles in the rear valence below the bumper, also there is a punched hole in the firewall I beleive it is to the right of the wire harness box (looking from the engine compartment)

Of course responding to richs69rs, there was the badging on the steering wheel, front fenders, the grille and the panel below the rear deck. If it is bonafied all these clues and like richs69rs had mentioned will begin to ring true how real it might be. If all these little subtle items are there, then it is coming closer to being a true RS car. Event the best of fake cars do not go to this extent to change one to a correct RS car. And if they did then start looking for all the reproduction parts and this should make you wonder about it's validity. Then see if the guy that is claiming it is so correct has a sweaty brow!   No suits, No boots, No ties, No lies    You can always smell BS
