black tail panel on black ss 69
« on: April 19, 2009, 01:15:08 AM »
For what its worth, I had the garage door open and was wiping my black 69 ss car down today, with the tail of the car facing south, 1 pm in the afternoon. As I finished wiping the car down in the back, the tail panel color showed itself as being different to the body good enough for me to find the paint outline as it goes into the trunk at a 45 degree angel. The is no doubt in my mind, my car had its tail panel painted with a different black than the body. I rechecked data on this website and it appears to indicate black SS cars did not receive the black out tail treatment. Not so on mine.

I would say its 10-15% grayer in color than the deeper black of the body color. With the sun shining into the back of the garage appears to a good way to tell on my car.  I hope to get a picture but it would be best judged by an expert, I did find the paint seam going into the trunk so I will try to get a picture of that. Anoter way to also check may be with a paint meter as far as the color difference verification.

I sent in 8-9 pics to Kurt on my painted black tail on a black L78 69. He can be the judge. I will try to downsize one and post here.
I am 100% sure a 'mostly gloss' black paint is used on the tail panel different than the full gloss body black color. My car was waxed and preserved well back in 69-73 so maybe the satin was polished to a gloss more than usual.
The 45 degree border line shows up in the trunk clearly.
the shade of blacks are different, only visiblie in direct sunlight.

You can see the tape line in the jamb with a different (though slightly) gloss there.

Its difficult to say.  If the black lacquer (even if flat/semi initially) has been rubbed/waxed, it will turn to gloss.  And if gloss originally, it could easily dye back to a flat appearance with no maintenance and exposure to the elements.

Either/both very liikely to happen.  Replicate what you find in the hidden/un-exposed areas is my idea.

Black69 -

Good observation, it is difficult to see unless in the right light on a black body.
Check out this thread. It is called 'black on tailpan on ss cars' from ealier this summer.

This thread will uncover the debate about your question. Take what you can from it as there does not seem to be an agreement on this subject yet. I also recommend you add your findings to it for future reference.

I was playing with flattening agent mixed into black last night.
When I took the black that I had mixed for brackets etc and added flattener to it, the color had a slightly grey tint that would not be noticeable if the colors were not touching one another.
