Colvin's "By the Numbers" says:

Camaro - 61 Amp - 1100796 - A/C Ex. 6-Cyl. Smog Control or P.S.
             61 Amp - 1100817 - A/C 6-Cyl. Smog Control or P.S.

1967 RS/SS 350 - PG - Sierra Fawn - Black Vinyl - Gold Deluxe
1974 Z/28 - 4-speed - Silver (with those ridiculous stripes)  Black Interior
1998 Z/28 - 6-speed - Bright green - Convertible

Jason Scott's book lists the 1100817 as: 61 Amp - 68 w/: a/c. AIR or PS

Confusing.
So if the Car was V-8 or 6 cylinder with Air Conditioning AND had either A.I.R. or Power Steering or both,
it got the "817"?

Thanks. What about the starter for the same car? 68 SS350

You want even more confusion? Here's what the 68 Chassis Service Manual says:

1100796 - All V8 W/C60 AND C75, all L6 W/C60 AND C75 EXC K19 and N40 (So... what the hell is C75??)

1100817 - All L6 W/K79 AND K19, and/or N40

1100814 Camaro 302 WITH C60. (Since when did the Z28 come with A/C!!!)

And according to the same manual, the correct starter would be the 1107368, BUT I don't think this is correct either. Mark will know for sure, but I think it's 1107365. The P&A shows it to be either the 1107365 or the 1107388, but I think the 388 is a service replacement.

So you can see that even GM documentation is totally screwed up when it comes to alternators and starters!

Mark???

C75 is the climate control (you set the desired interior temp) version of AC. Fancy-smancy back then, available on the full-size cars.

We have to keep in mind that the P&A books list parts that will "service" the application functionally, and frequently reflect parts consolidation to keep parts proliferation at a minumum in the Service inventories; Service part numbers are seldom the same as the production-line parts, especially if more than a year or two has passed since the car was built.

Hi all, What would be the correct alternator for a 68 Camaro SS 350 convertible with power steering, power top and smog, obviously no ac. I was told it would be a 1100794 37amp. Thanks Michael

That's correct Michael. The 1100794 was the standard alternator for all V8 engines except the Z28 302.

Thanks Ed, I wasn’t sure with having power steering, power top, and smog pump that a 37amp would be sufficient.

Plenty. For back then! There was also an optional 42 amp (1100696) and 62 amp (1117777) alternators available, so your car "may" have come with one of those. But you would need documentation showing them to be "correct". If you don't care about correctness, you can get one of those, or even go with a 10SI or 20SI internally regulated alternator used in the 70's and 80's.

There are very low electrical loads in a 67-69 Camaro. The fan blower motor is probably the biggest. It's probably what drove AC to get the higher output alternator.
Putting a higher output alternator into a factory 1st gen is fixing a non-existant problem.
