Block Casting and Stamping #'s...
« on: March 02, 2009, 07:00:49 PM »

Could any of the experts 'on board' please take a look at these cast and stamped block numbers and give me their impressions and commets regarding their impressions of the validity of what they see and possibly what car build date would roughly coincide with what they see with these...
  Thanks - Randy

Randy -

You can compare it to a "spare" 302 I own...  http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=1558.0

Kurt estimates the car from which this engine is from would have been built at the end of February or beginning of March.

Thanks Paul (and Kurt)... kinda thought Feb sometime myself, but was more concerned with the font and angle of the stamp code and whether all on this board considered it and the actual deck surface itself as looking normal. I scratched up the surface somewhat trying to remove the paint from the surface..
From what little I know of deck surface finishes and fonts it all looked good to me - just searching for confirmation from others with more knowledge of these things than I.
  Again, Thanks - Randy

Dutch -

I'm no expert, but the stamping looks O.K. to me (even with the paint in the characters).

The car my engine came out of was built 3864 units (or about 4 days) after yours and the engine was assembled two days before yours!     ;D

Paul:

And you still have the '266' distributor in there as well I hope, despite the past offers!

Paul,
You need to check your eyes out. Randy's block is 2 months before yours.

Randy,
I think the stamps look good.

Thanks for your input Kurt - and great to hear.
I always figured it to be good myself, but confirmation from an expert such as yourself with so much more experience in having seen so many other stamps and decks than I, gives me the comfort level that I guess I needed...

Kurt -

It's not my eyes I need to check, it's my brain!  You're right, I meant to write months not days.   :-[

Vin stamp is good, can I get a photo of the whole pad for my data base?

Thanks,

Jerry, the whole pad is there, you just have to slide the picture over.

I just emailed it to you....

Jerry,

Are you collecting any for your data base, or is this one you were looking for that you don't have enough of? I could add  if interested.

Jerry - I thank you also for your input with this.
Are you collecting such info for reference in doing appraisals and documentation or are you creating a database that is model specific to Z 2/8's for other reasons?
I bought one of the first editions of your Definitive book and in it have recorded most of the cast and 'as stamped' drivetrain and body numbers that I have come across over years of tinkering, for the sake of comparison...
You are welcome to this info if it can be of any value to you - just let me know...
Randy
