I'm building an original 68 327/275hp engine and need to know what the fill tube and cap should be. I have the original valve cover style that has the "v" shaped top with the raised square in the middle for the decal and these have no breather holes. Should the oil fill tube cap be a push on or twist on style. Also will it be the only way that the engine breathes thus be a breather style cap? Thanks, Dan

Not sure about the '68 Camaro, but '66-'68 SB Corvettes used the same block/intake configuration, and they had a sealed twist-on cap and a PCV valve threaded into a bung on the fill tube with a hose to the carb base as one side of the PCV system, and the other (intake) side was an adapter in the hole in the back of the block next to the distributor with a large rubber hose that connected to an elbow in the air cleaner base.

I had a 66 327 years ago in a different Camaro and it was as you said with the large vent tube at the back of the block. This car and engine are #'s matching and a Dec 67 build date (68 Rally Sport). I did not get the original intake and valve covers with the car and picked up used original valve covers the style I listed in my original post. I do have the correct oil fill tube style late 67 manifold and both types of fill tubes (twist on and push on cap). I assume I need a breather style cap as the valve covers have no holes. I was hoping for someone with a picture of an original set up. Come on you guys! Show off your 68 stuff ;-). Thanks, Dan

68 327's didn't use the V indented rocker arm covers. They had the plain, flat top style with a single 1" hole in each cover. The hole on the passenger side is conected via a rubber hose to the side of the air cleaner. The hole on the drivers side is for the PCV valve, and is connected to the base of the carb. The oil fill cap is the sealed twist on type.

AHHHHHH!!
I thought that might be the case. I've been searching every engine compartment piture I can find on the net and I see that the majority have the style you described. I have located a set of the flat top style already this morning so I may have it all handled shortly. Thanks for all the input from everybody, Dan

Hello Summertime, I have a 68 327/275, am the original owner, all original components. The oil filler neck is the kind John Z described, with the PVC outlet (plugged) and indented cap. This is the original filler and cap. The interesting thing about it is that it was painted orange new( and still is) but under the paint it is chrome! Have had many people tell me its wrong, should be black, with flat cap, and so on. Then I show them the invoice. By the way, my car is a late car, built in june of 68. Hope this helps. C
