Points distrib 1111481 is there supposed to be....
« on: October 29, 2008, 02:18:34 PM »
Is there supposed to be a reddish paint overspray towards the rear of the unit near the "timing slash" on the distributor body akin to the 621 bellh'sing overspray or was this done possibly by a "Bubba" in his or her angst to paint a cast iron intake manifold and make her look nice like "back in the day"??
Thanks!  Ted

Varying degrees of minor engine orange overspray are quite common on the distributor base - the distributor was covered with a coffee can during the painting process at Flint V-8.

JohnZ and maybe Kurt, are points (not in the dizzy) taken away if there is no apparent overspray on the rear of a distributor and or on a 621 bellh'sing??? Can't really see you guys stretching the necks
in order to gander at the above... I imagine the paint on the fenders would take a beating. eh???
Take care gennamen and don't eat tooo much All Hallow's Eve goodies.  I know with me trying to bear down on a candy toffee apple with false dentures is gall dang it next to impossible...  T.

Some cars had overspray on the distributor base, some didn't. All manual-transmission cars had at least some overspray, usually more than just overspray, on the bellhousing - it was in place when the engine was painted.

Here's the pics. 68 distributor with original paint on it. Was sitting on a shelf in the garage for decades.....
Notice the vacuum advance got oversprayed and how the green stripe was painted -it wasn't brushed on.

That's the ID stripe that Delco put on to help the engine plant ID the distributor. The colors are listed in the Colvin's CBTN.

Kurt,

That is first one I've ever seen with a sprayed ID stripe.  Have restored hundreds and hundreds of these over the years.........probably in the thousands by now.   Are you sure that is an original ID stripe?

Yes. It was pulled from a car decades ago, long before anyone would restore a plain old distributor like that.  I too was surprised it was sprayed.
Got a good pic of an original brushed stripe?
