1968 z28 heads
« on: August 22, 2008, 07:41:57 PM »
I just looked at a 1968 z28 that I have known about since about 1976. My question is the heads are 3917291 and they are dated I 12 7 while the block is A 8 8  while the car is a 0 2 B build date. The owner now is the 2nd guy to own the car and he contends this is the way he bought the car from his cousin. Do the head dates seem a long way off or could the I be a L  which it could be but sure looks like a I to my eyes. Thanks

I went back to have a better look at the head dates and was able to get the car pushed out into the sunlight . I used  some brake cleaner on a shop rag and was able to clean some of the grime off the date casting and with a good light and some glasses I found that the date is actually L 12 7 . Engine is awfull dirty inside but the rest of the parts on the motor line up with The Definitive 67-68 fact book.

The heads have also had screw in studs put in but no push rod guides. What does this do to the car being judged original . Thanks Paul

I can't say for whatever Camaro organization you are questioning, but it would be very unusual for a judging organization to remove the valve covers for such judging (I've been involved with NNC, CCCI, CNA, and NCRS judging and none of them remove fastened on parts for their judging)..
