Locking gas cap for 68 SS ???
« on: September 24, 2008, 03:28:32 AM »
Does anyone know if any company makes a locking SS gas cap for a 68 Camaro, or does anyone know
of a way to convert a normal SS cap to a locking one?

Why did the original SS gas caps never seem to fit correctly?

Sorry if this has been asked before.  I tried a search but came up empty.

Chevy did offer a dealer installed "locking gas filler cap" in 68, #986970.  But it was a standard cap and not marked SS.

In 68 I remember buying gas as low as 19 cents, so I doubt if there was much of a market for original lockable gas caps.  Never seen anyone making one today...  But I don't doubt if the market might urge someone to design one.  The original owner in the Miami area of my 68 coupe did buy a lockable cap.

As to fit, you're right.  But the day of sealing caps had not yet arrived and did you ever try to put gas in the back fin filler of a 57?

It was locking cap with a Bow tie in the middle on a black background and they were quite popular as the neck is very short on a 67-69 and is easy to siphon...

First off, I am not trying to give a commercial to this company, but I just found this item this morning.

Go to   http://www.supermuscleparts.com/gascap.aspx

This is a repo, but it is only 24.95

I just wish somebody would make an SS version.

I had one of those on my 68.  A sock would work better.  I was told my fuel neck was worn out, but I bought an NOS original standard cap and it fits like vise grips.

Do you mean that the locking gas cap did not fit correctly or that the SS one did not fit right?

Even though the locking bow tie one won't be exactly correct, I believe it will be better than the original SS one.

Do you mean to keep someone from stealing your gas or for fit of the cap?  I've worked with all three caps on 68s (SS, locking, standard) and while the SS is the most awkward fit (It's a lot more "bulky".) it should still firmly. The locking cap fits fine on my 68 coupe...  But I would agree it's more "sock-like" in locking it!

The Bow Tie locking cap.  It was a repro and my luck with repro is not good.  I had a 68 SS and the cap was a little loose, but nothing like the locking cap I had on my Z.  It could be pulled of without the key.  I'm sure there are some differences in fit with certain cars and maybe some of the locking caps are better than others.  I don't mean to dis the cap for everyone's use, I'm just saying what my experience was with it.  I might also mention I had a repro standard cap that didin't fit worth beans either.  The only one that worked was the NOS one for me.

Actually I think some of the repo stuff is better than the original.  But I can't say for sure about the gas caps.

In my opinion, the original SS gas caps were always loose, and never sealed correctly.  They would easily rock side to side
or up and down.

What I might try doing is finding a tight fitting regular gas cap and see if somehow combine parts of it with the SS cap to
make things fit better.

I am looking mainly for a good fit, but the locking capability would be a big plus.  Maybe I will try to have a custom one made.
