1968 Z28 timing chain cover
« on: August 28, 2008, 01:50:10 AM »
Anyone have a good pic of what a 68 timing cover looks like with the timing tab welded on. I am trying to get a buddies 68 z running and I am thinking he has a 69 timing cover on the car hence the trouble setting the timimg. My 68 Z is stoired away and I can not quite remember which cover he needs. He does have the correct balancer with the timing mark inline with the keyway.

That is the correct balancer for 1967 and 68.  They have short welded timing tab.  The 69 is much longer and zero is offset from the keyway.

I think that the timimg tab is incorrect as it is a long square tab. I have a box of timimg covers but not sure which one he needs. Any pictures. Thanks Paul

Here's a '69 Z/28 timing cover.

That is the timing cover the guy has on his car but with a 68 balancer. Could that combo be giving me a problem setting up the timing?

Yes! A '68 balancer with a '69 timing cover will show timing as 10* retarded from what it really is.

I came up with a 68 cover and after installing it on the 302 timing setup was no problem. Thanks again guys, the weather is great for all weekend so its time to drive my buddies 68Z for a bit before he gets it back.
