1969 Z28 with no partial vin numbers stamped on block.
« on: August 25, 2008, 11:32:36 PM »
I can not seam to find any numbers on the rough pad near the oil filter where it should be my Z28 is a norwood car with a build of 2nd week in August 1969. My DZ motor build is May 29th Casting date for block is May 25th, heads casting dates are May 26th. All previous owners have stated the motor is original espec. the original owner. I have talked to them all. The V0529 DZ cade looks original with no partial vin stamped by it , but there are 5 large numbers 01877 that are stamped off to the left. I was told they are  the engine's  first rebuild date  done at the machine shop. Jan 8th 1977??? These numbers are larger and not even like the factory V0529 DZ stampings.   I know the oil filter location is hard to see, maybe factory did not stamp vin on this one?? Any tricks to seeing them???

If the engine is in the car you probably won't be able to see them .I have a stripped block on a stand and still can't read all the numbers .

There was no 08B for August 1969.

A May 29th engine in an August Z/28 is way beyond the norm. I had to go back to 06A to find a May engine.

My cowl tag says 08C for the date not 08B sorry. What do you mean there is no 08B date??? I have read that engine builds can be 60 to 90 days before cars builds but is not the norm, usually it is 1 to 6 weeks before the cars build Right?

I have 638 '69 Z/28 vin/engine dates in a db. I would estimate 85% of them are 2-3 weeks from the body tag date. Many of the remainder are closer than that; some 05A cars have early May engines for example. Z/28s were in great demand so engines did not remain in inventory very long. Engines were not issued by date; an early 05A Z/28 can have a later engine than an 05A car built after it. Don't forget that the body tag date is when body fab began. The car was final assembled up to several days later. My favorite example is a documented original '67 Z/28. 06E body; July 6th engine.

Don't apply this to COPOs BTW. COPOs built the same day can have engine dates 7 weeks apart.

There are no known 08B body tags. Several production weeks were skipped.

So they did produce Z28 cars withe 08C build dates on cowl tags, they just did not for 08B??  Thnks maybe my motor is not the original one, but it sure corrct inside and out for a 69 DZ motor.  Maybe a previuos owner purchased an entire complete motor for the car???

That is what I did years ago. I located a DZ block, rounded up all the correct pieces and had it assembled. Somewhere there is an 02B Z/28 with an October DZ engine.

Just a final thought with 20,000 Z28 cars produced in 1969.  With only 600 cars is the database coud there be exceptions 600 is only less than 5% of the run.  Will there ever be a doc. service like Marti reports or PHS in the future???? Since pontiacs were built at Norwood at the same time as camaros coud there be Vin records. Just a question that I am sure has been asked time and time again. Thanks for all the imput. Kindest reguards.

Chevrolet has conducted extensive searches for the 40+ year old paperwork everyone believes still exists. If they could not find any of it chances are it was destroyed years ago.

Hey all,
While on topic of build dates and lack of pad stamps, a question...I have a 69 Z with VO0425DZ and a 05A build date on Trim tab..Engine block is 04/18/69..with 010 block. I have a FRONT pad VIN stamp of 9 N637827(for the database). I looked very closely at oil filter site and cannot see ANY signs of sanding, machining, etc and, no #'s.
Has anyone ever heard of mid-69 front pad stamps? Is it at least possible this is the matching engine?(always thought it was till Team Camaro advised on Norwood stamping changeover) ???
Thanks  Pat
