Smog hose part numbers
« on: August 09, 2008, 10:32:48 PM »
I am trying to duplicate the exact markings of the smog pump hoses.
I want to find the correct part numbers and different applications of the ribbed smog hoses?

Were both hoses the same part number? are different years the same?
I am finding conflicting data from what I see in my collection, and what is written in the AIM, and other books.

BB hoses are longer, but is the part number different?

Anyone have any pictures?

I'll bite. These hoses are originally off a 70 Camaro L78. I have known of the the car from the early 70's when I was still in grade school. The owner was also an owner of the 2 Camaros I own now and I bought the entire smog setup off him in about 1983 for $15. I also have 4 of the original steel wheels from that car. The long hose is 3940937 GM JR and the short hose is 3969908 GM LM. The long hose still has that white residue on it that original hoses can have.

Ah - the 68 hoses.
They are different - no ribs, and different sizes.

Thanks

These pic's are of the hose from my original survivor smog pump system, that included the hoses, pump, clamps, etc. correctly date coded on my 69Z, 05A Norwood car.  The part number and font style can be seen on the upper cross over hose, P/N-3932946.  The second pic #2 is another original upper hose.

The lower hose (perhaps sectioned from a longer length of hose?) did not have a part number on it.  It is ribbed as shown.

Here is an original 69 - 70 BB short hose.
Same 3969908 part number - but this one has a different Broadcast code.
In fact this one has 2 broadcast codes imprinted -- JS and JY.

This is what I have been seeing - a lot of variations and versions.
Seems every time I ask - I get different responses.

Here is one I MADE.
this was copied from a very early survivor 69 Z.  -- also this hose# is shown in Jerry's book.
Don't know why 2 different numbers were used in 69? Or were they? - just can't be sure.

As you can see different fonts were used - this is the same style as the 476 version shown in a earlier post.
I have a lot of original examples of the 476 and 478 hoses - those numbers were used on the Chev SB's for many years into the mid 70's
The font styles and imprints are very consistent for the whole usage run.  example: the 69 hoses look EXACTLY like the 70-73 hoses.
Although on the 478 hose I have seen differences in the placement order of the codes.

So I could really use a few more people to take a look at their cars, and let me know what you find.

Here are the hoses I made for the 69 and later SB cars.
I still need to determine when the change from the early 446 hose to the 476 hose occurred - or was there a change?

I wouldn't be surprised if the 69 SB hoses were different.
The left side smog tube changed from an end inlet to a center inlet, so the hose probably changed too.

Hose is also a commodity item, so there were probably multiple suppliers to GM.

Correct - and ribbing wasn't a hose design characteristic - it was the means of supplier identification; Doc Rebuild has been reproducing Corvette hoses of all kinds for many years and has all the GM drawings, and all the drawings show ribs as optional construction for supplier ID.

That is another thing I noticed.
Some of my original hoses have 2 ribs - some 3 ribs, some 4 ribs.
There does not seem to be a definable pattern.

Some of the hoses with the exact same fonts- have a different rib count.  ???

Thanks for the input
I think there are too many variations to go crazy over.
Just going to pick one style and go with it.

Here are the 1970 454 Chevelle hoses I made.

The shorter hose is the same number used on the BB Camaros.
