Z28 ID numbers
« on: October 24, 2008, 04:34:00 PM »
Hi.  We have a guy that is selling what he is calling a Z28 Camaro, is there a true way to determine if it is real or a fake?  It has the white stripes on the hood and trunk like the picture of one.  Is there a number somewhere that tells us it is a Z28?  We were told that you can tell be the VIN number, is that true?  We were also told that there is a number somewhere around the heater box that tells, is that true?  We can't find any number around the heater box under the hood, is it inside the car?  We don't want to get burned in this deal so any help would be appreciated.  Thanks, Tammy.

It is not my intention to be insulting but you are clearly neophytes, on the verge of buying a car that could be worth far less than the asking price. Or may be a complete fake.

If this is a 1st gen Z/28 [67/68/69] there are many things to look for all of which can and have been added to standard Camaros. Some of the standard Z/28 mechanical features-4 speed, power disc brakes, dual exhaust-were optional on any Camaro.

If you are contemplating a big $ purchase you need to have the most knowledgeable person available examine the car:

Thanks but you still didn't answer our questions. ???  We would also like to know where the 1967 Z28 was produced, California or somewhere else?

You're not getting it whitefeather. With the high prices genuine Z/28s sell for there are people building knock-offs to sell to unsuspecting buyers such as yourself. Some of them are very well done and have fooled people who thought they were knowledgeable. Quite recently in fact.

While it may be possible to convey some generic Z/28 information in this forum the expertise needed today requires many years of hands-on experience with the cars. The car in question could in fact be a real Z/28 but missing so many unique Z/28 components that the value would be significantly affected.

But to answer a few of your questions there were two plants building 1st gen Camaros: Van Nuys, California and Norwood, Ohio. That in itself adds to the dilema: identically ordered 67 Z/28s will differ by plant. There is nothing in the VIN that identifies a 67-69 Camaro as a Z/28; all 8 cylinder coupes have the same model number as the first portion of the VIN: 12437. The serial portion of the VIN was stamped in two obscure locations on the body; on top of the cowl, sometimes visible through the vent grille and on the front RH cowl side pod under the heater enclosure. This is not visible on an assembled car. The engine and transmission [high-perf only for 67] were also stamped. Fake stampings are a big problem in the hobby. For 67 and some 69 Z/28s there is specific body tag info but repro tags have been around for years and there seem to be plenty of loose original tags available to the highest bidder.

In general a 67 Z/28 would be difficult to clone; 68s and 69s fairly easy. The standing joke in the hobby is there are more 69 Z/28s now than there were in 69.

Follow the link to the site; at least buy the book.

There is a lot of "very" useful information in the red CRG header in the upper right corner of this page if you take the time and do some research you'll be surprized what you can fine.  Everything you have been told is not true.  As William stated, with so much "cloning" and restamping it's hard to prove it's a real Z.

NO, you can not tell by the vin. You could rule out a 6 cylinder, but to verify a Z is a difficult process. You need an expert to examine the car. Even then, it might be difficult. There are many more fist gen Z's today, than there were in the day. Follow the CRG link at the top of the page. There is a lot you can learn on this site.

Post photos of the car, vin, & trim tag.

What state are you in?

Did you read this thread: http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=4432.0;all

Post the VIN here. Someone may be familiar with the car.

If you are able to find a Canadian car with GM documentation give GM vintage services a call to make sure the paperwork matches the car. I have heard of 2 separate times were people had Gm documentation for a car they had for sale, the only problem was the serial# shad been changed on the paperwork to match the car for sale. I never thought about it but I suppose if you are good on a computer you can change anything. BEWARE
