GM 14x6 Trim Ring Quality
« on: July 29, 2008, 04:34:15 PM »
Has anyone purchased a set of GM rally wheel trim rings recently?  How is the quality?  I'm looking into sending my rings out to be restored, but they are the 'inside clip' style, which means that the few little dings in them can not be removed.  So it looks like I may just order a new set of GM rings.

Also, can anyone confirm the correct GM part number for these 14x6 rings?  I believe it is 475019, but I haven't been able to confirm.

Thanks,
Jeff

^ That's what I found on GMpartsdirect.com as well.  I just hate to order a set and find out that they have the 'usual' GM parts imperfections (scratches, dings, etc.).  The last set I bought of these was way back in the mid 80's and they were very nice at that time.

Is that for a set?  Thats not an original GM part number for sure, its probably some kind of repro part number that GM licences and sells.  Those 4 clip attachment setups suck, they rattle if the rivets attaching them to the ring get even a little loose.

I got a set from Classic Muscle a few months ago for my 68 and they look great, but I think in the long run Mark's comment about the 4 clip setup will prove true.  They fit tight at first, but I can see how they will rattle eventually.

Ed may be able to give you the original part #, which would start with a 39... (I think).  I'd give you the service # but I'm 500 miles from my P&A

just watch the "shipping and handling" with gmpartsdirect. they give the stuff away at just above cost, but make it up on handling.

Rick Miller does awesome work on trim ring restoration.  He did an original set for my 67Z, and I've seen his handiwork on other cars at Carlisle legends judging this year.  If you are interested, please send me a private message and I'll pass on his contact information.  Paul

Thanks Paul.  I have already been in contact with Rick.  My style of clips differ from the 'correct' outside clip trim rings which Rick usually deals with.  We're trying to figure out what can be done with mine.  I'm hopeful that I can just send him my trim rings and have them come back fully restored.  I'll try to keep everyone posted on what happens.

Heres the GM Service Part Numbers from a Camaro 1972 Master Parts Catalog.

3923522 - 1967/ALL EXC 302 ENGINE

3901704 - 1967/ALL WITH 302 ENGINE

3923522 - 1968/ALL WITH 14 IN RALLY WHEEL — FIRST JOBS HAVE NOTCH FOR VALVE STEM

3934892 - 1968/ALL WITH 14 IN RALLY WHEEL — AFTER JOBS HAVE HOLE FOR VALVE STEM

3901704 - 1968/ALL WITH 15 IN RALLY WHEEL — WITH DISC BRAKES

3901708 - 1968/ALL WITH 15 IN RALLY WHEEL — EXC DISC BRAKES

3934892 - 1969/ALL WITH 14 IN STD WHEEL /OPTION P06/
1969—71/ALL WITH 14 IN RALLY WHEEL /OPTION ZJ7/ EXC 350 /300 HP/ AND 396 ENGINE

9796919 - 1969-70/ALL WITH 14 IN RALLY WHEEL /OPTION ZJ7/ WITH 350 /300 HP/ AND 396 ENGINE
1969/ALL WITH 14 IN SUPER SPORT WHEEL /OPTION N66/

3901708 - 1969/ALL WITH 15 IN WHEEL

GMpartsdirect is a dealer in North Carolina (I think) they sell GM parts, but they also sell the same licensed GM repro parts that most of the Camaro parts places sell.  By the part number (it doesn't fit into GMs longer part number scheme and has no correlation to previous Service part numbers) I would suspect that these rings would be the same ones that Ricks, Year One, or any of the others sell.

I found someone with those still in stock NOS - from before they were discontinued.
Kinda expensive at $197 each. Are they really worth that much?

Well, the local Chevy dealer punches 475019 into their system and comes up with the 14x6 trim ring as a valid part.  At first, they questioned the part number too, but there it was.

UPDATE:  The 'inside clip' type rings have a clip ring that can not be removed like the 'outside clip' trim rings that Rick restores.  Therefore, dents & dings can not be removed from them as part of the restoration.

It looks like I'll pick up a set of new trim rings - I just need to decide which ones.

I was at my shop yesterday and I looked up on my shelf where I have a few sets of trim rings.
I have 4 GM boxes with that 475019 number.
They are the old 4 clip style and are in fact real old GM parts.
Will try to get some pictures this weekend.

I just ordered a set of the USA made trim rings from Classic Muscle (based on lakeholme's experience with them).  I'll report back on what they look like.

Right now, mine are sitting on a shelf, too.  (Still, working on a prep for a re-paint.) Generally, Classic Muscle has good stuff.  Let's compare notes on the rattling issue in a year or so.

Well, I received the set of US made trim rings and I'm not really impressed with them.  I'm going to send them back.  They would be OK for a driver I guess, but all of them have scratches on them.  The scratches are relatively small area wise, but they are fairly deep, meaning that you couldn't remove them with some metal polish by hand.  I could send them off to be re-polished, but I can't see investing roughly another $200 into these rings.  Also, the galvanized clip ring extends into the valve stem hole quite a bit more than my older GM ones, which doesn't look good at all.

Some of the scratches on the outer lip look like they were caused by improper packing.  The individual rings are just in plastic bags, then they are placed face-to-face in sets of 2.  The 2 sets are then taped together.  The problem is that the ring faces rub against each other in transit.  On mine, the plastic bags were completely worn through in spots, causing the ring faces to rub on each other.  What is weird is that each ring appears to have a scratched area in the same spot next to the valve stem opening.  Also, each ring has an area that isn't completely smooth.  It looks like there is an area of the tooling that may have some surface irregularities.

I image that I would have the same issue if I bought a set directly from GM as well.  The only problem is that my dealer says that they are 'special order' and they will not take them back unless they have significant damage.  They told me that small scratches/scuffs would be considered "commercially acceptable".

My old GM ones that I have right now still look better IMO.  I guess that I'm just too picky.  Oh well, I tried.

Jeff68,

Now I feel bad about my recommendation!   :-[
Mine look fine.  Smooth, clear finish with no scratches...  I did pick them up right out of their warehouse in Winston-Salem, NC, although they were already packed in the box and wrapped in paper.

IMO, it's fine to be picky.  You're the paying customer!
