67 DG Rally wheel trim rings
« on: July 10, 2008, 04:02:29 AM »
I need to know what version trim rings originally came on a 67 Camaro SS (2nd week November car) with 14x6 DG code rally wheels.  I want to get an NOS or restored set, and saw these on eBay, which look exactly like the originals on my car:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310065245695

But the seller says that these are not correct for 67 DG Rallies, and that the wider ones in this auction (with the closed valve stem hole) are correct instead:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&viewitem=&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.com%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm37%26satitle%3D190231887929%26category0%3D%26fvi%3D1&item=190231887929

My car is a survivor 39K mile orignal paint and interior 67 SS350, with the original DG wheels that have never been repainted.  The center caps are the originals too, and the trim rings have the 4 clips on the outer band.  So, given that the entire rest of the car is original I'm pretty confident that the rings are the correct originals too.  But I want to make sure (if anybody knows for sure) before I buy any.

I checked the P&A book dated 10-1-66, and it only lists one trim ring (Group 5.871, part no. 3901318) for all 67 Camaro, Chevelle and Nova w/ J52 disc brakes (whether 5 inch or 6 inch rallies).  That # superceded to 3923522 on 7/67; and the P&A book dated 10-1-67 only lists that one part no. for all 67 Camaro, Chevelle and Nova w/ disc brakes (whether 5 inch or 6 inch rallies).

So that leads me to think that the skinnier version in the first auction listed above (like the ones on my car) is correct, since it was originally used on both 5 inch and 6 inch wheels.  The wider one with the closed hole wouldn't fit on a 5 inch wheel . . .

Any help?  Thanks - Jeff

Here is an original trim ring from my 11E car. My wheels are 5 inch "DA" rallys.

Do your original rings look like mine?

Mine are exactly like yours!  And I'm sure now that the same ring was used on 14x5 and 14x6 67 Camaro rallies.

I bought an assm. manual today and RPO J52 lists two wheel assemblies - one for L48 (350) and L78 (396) (which are 14x6), and one for everything else (14x5 I presume).  However, UPC 0, sheet C1, lists only one trim ring part no. (to be put in the trunk of the car at the factory) for RPO J52 on "ALL" models, without any designation or distinction for wheel size or engine size.

So that means there was only one trim ring for Camaro rallies in 67, whether 5 inch or 6 inch.  (Notably, it is a different part no. from the trim ring in the 67 Chevelle A/M though, for whatever reason.)

Thanks for the pics and the help - Jeff

Thanks, that is actually the fellow I've been talking too.  I'm going to probably buy a redone set and put my originals on the shelf.  Jeff

thats an aweful big expense to put on the shelf. have yours restored for about 90 a ring, and put them on the car. rick is a great guy to deal with. you wont be disappointed.
