69 camaro console oil gauge line
« on: May 27, 2008, 03:19:16 PM »
I just finished my X77, when I smelled some oil.  Discovered the oil gauge line right at the gauge managed to dump 2 quarts under the carpet.  It is a plastic line.  I ordered a new one from OPG and I bet it is plastic.  Is the original plastic, or copper , or something?  my 72 P/U has a metal line.  If it is plastic, what is the correct installation procedure to keep from screwing up the new one?

My 69 SS has a copper line from the block and appears to be copper under the dash
It has never been replaced to the best of my knowledge
Hope that helps

That was discussed here before.  I believe John Z said that all the factory ones were the black plastic line.

Therefore it is more than likely a plated steel line (color wasn't quite right to be copper)

Thanks folks.  I looked at the other post.  I'm going to head to my local fitting/line assembly shop and get a steel one made.  The one in my Dad's original 72 P/U is steel, and '69 Z/28Fathom Green is confident they came that way.  I'm also taking the gauge so the right ends get put on it.

My x33 car has a plastic one in it and does not look like it has been touched since original installation.

Good Luck.

Black plastic line is correct. and it takes a different compression fitting than the hardware store variety (I tried one once and had oil on the carpet).  At least it does for an original OP gauge, I have no idea if a repo gauge uses a different fitting or not.

The original factory line was black nylon, with GM-proprietary taper-lock male and female fittings (photo below), and the nylon line had tiny brass inserts inside it at each end to keep it from collapsing when the fittings were tightened. If yours has a metal line or fittings at the end with separate compression sleeves, it has been replaced.
