1968 Camaro Headers
« on: May 09, 2008, 04:05:07 PM »
Can anybody please tell me exactly which headers fit a 1968 Camaro, 350 without any issues. I've seen some headers dented in to fit around the steering box. Another person told me he had get a special oil filter with his set of headers. I use the Fram PH30 oil filter. I am hoping you folks have some experience with a few different types of headers that work perfectly. Also I want to get ceramic ones.

Thank you.

I have Hooker Super Comps on my Z.  I have no real issues other than one of the sparkplug boots is real close to a pipe.

I also have ceramic Hooker Super Comps on my '68, but had to dimple a pipe at the steering box. Plug wire clearance is no problem with my angled plugs. I've run Cyclone, Hedman and others with no problem. Tube size seems to be the critical issue--once you get past 1-5/8" it seems to get dicey. My present Hookers are 1-3/4"--what size are yours, 68Z? For my money, I'd buy Hedman if I had to do it over again. They were 1-3/4" tubes and built heavy and solid with no clearance issues at all. They're collecting rust right now because I wanted ceramic-coated headers this time around. The ceramic coating is terrific and worth the extra $$!  I was disappointed that the Hookers didn't fit perfectly for the money I spent on them. My 2 cents.

I have no idea what size mine are.  They were on the car and I had them coated too.

My experience is 25 years old now, but back in '83, I bought aluminum coated headers (i think they were Hedmann).
The one big issue I had was that the collector ran very close to the starter.  The heat from that fried my starter constantly.  I had to carry a metal pipe with me, and bang on the starter to free it up, after it had ran for awhile.  I ended up making  a heat shield, but only had moderate success with that.  I eventually went back to stock manifolds to cure the problem.  Good luck ;)
