I'm working on a CRG metallic brake report for the J56 and J65 brake packages used iin 1967. As many of you may know, those metallic brake packages were discontinued after the '67 model year. The finned brake drums used in '68 seem to be a lower cost alternative to the earlier packages and so I would like to understand which models received the finned front brake drums in 1968 and which models did not. So far, it looks like the SS models and L30/M20 models have the finned drums as standard equipment but I'm not sure about other models. I would appreciate any input on this so I can have a high degree of confidence in the accuracy of the report. My understanding is the rear drums were not finned for any model of Camaro in '68. If I'm wrong about that, please let me know.

Thanks,
-Jon

My best recollection of a 68 SS I had a long time ago was, the front drums were finned and the rear ones were not.

Although my car is a 1969 Base RS Coupe (01C Norwood) and not a 1968, it does have drum brakes.  Drums in the front are finned; drums in the rear are non finned.  So at least by the time Jan 1969 had rolled around, finned drums were being used on base cars as well.

As another data point, my 68 L30/M20 has finned front drums and non-finned rear drums.

Thanks guys for the data so far. I'd appreciate hearing from others, especially '68 owners with 327 and 6 cylinder cars.

I used to own a 68 camaro, power drum brakes with 327, 2bbl, and air. It had front finned drums also. I still have the trim tag info if you need it. I bought the car in 1980 and there were several owners before I got it, but it was complete just needing a new motor.

Thanks for the responses. Still looking for brake drum data, especially for the '68 327 2-barrels and 6-cylinder cars.

Thanks,

My 68 base 327 2 barrel has non finned, non power fronts. Both my 67's (1 base 327 2 barrel, 1 RS 327 2- barrel) are non-finned non power. My brother's 68 SS/RS 396 however has power finned front.

Jon, my '68 was a base 327 car, and it came with finned drums front and rear with manual brakes. In fact, it still has the original drums on it. I got the car in 1983, so it's unlikely anyone had added the finned rear drums because of the extra cost. I don't know if it was a 2-barrel car because the original engine had been replaced, but it had a factory manual transmission and a monoleaf 10-bolt if that helps.

Yes, if you could post the tag info, that would be helpful, esp the build date.

Others - please include the build date in your posts. That will help to see if there's a trend.

Thanks!!

Mine is a very early Norwood car going by the VIN. Hope this helps.

I've got an 04D '68 Base 'Vert. It was originally equipped with a six cylinder.
Drums are non-finned, front & back.

Sorry, I'm so late with info. Don't usually read the research topics.
Thought I'd chime in with info, anyway.
