cowl plenum breather
« on: April 06, 2008, 09:35:26 PM »
Has anyone heard or seen the reproduction cowl plenums from NKR products. Are they close as far as fit and finish to the originals. I just bought a 68Z that has the cut out for the cowl plenum and before I start the bodywork and fix this area I would like to know if they are a decent breather. I just cannot afford an original plenum breather

I looked into Nelson Rudisill's (NKR) repro cowl plenums a couple of years ago.  Back then, the major differences in his air cleaner as compared to an original were in the air cleaner lid and in the material used in the duct.  In my opinion, a 1st gen Camaro Z/28 "expert" can easily tell the difference between one of his repros and an original.  But, probably 95% of Camaro owners can't tell the difference between an original and a repro.  I happen to be lucky enough to own an original 67 Z with an original cowl plenum air cleaner, but that's only because I got into this stuff way back when the stuff was affordable.  If I was just getting in to this stuff today, I'd have no problem buying the repro cowl plenum air cleaner for a nice car.  After all, even if you have the money, there's just not a lot of original units to buy anyway!!  Just my two cents.

I would say this testimonial on their site answers your question:

"Nelson,
Your work on the 68 Z/28 cowl plenum is excellent."

You're not kidding Butch.  An original NOS '68 Z/28 cowl plenum air cleaner sold for almost $3900.00 a year ago on Ebay!  That's more than the whole car cost new!!     :)

Was going to post some pics of our original duct and air cleaner but Jon had posted a great deal of info here so this might assist with a comparison.

There was a guy on ebay selling fiberglass ducts that looked good and even had the material insertion center looking point.
