Fake Cowl Tag??
« on: March 29, 2008, 02:46:07 PM »
I would like your opinions on this cowl tag. I was interested in this L78 project until I saw the tag. I have told the guy that I believe the tag to be fake but he insists the tag is real and that the car has been in long time storage and is original. The rivets look wrong to me as well. Your opinions would be appreciated. Maybe I am missing something but the tag looks blatently fake to me.

I see a couple problem areas; the "weathering" makes it difficult.

I agree that the rivets look weird.

I saw the car on ebay as well...
Located in Long Island... says it was a street racer back in the day... maybe it is from Motion?

Hey, what's that "thingy" mounted on the front of the radiator support?  Also, I do see the orange around the jams & sill plates but why is the floor all red?  If it was originally a hugger orange car, shouldn't it have orange overspray in there?  Don't think they would have missed the jambs but got red all over the floor when it was re-painted.  Just thought it may be a clue to lead you to believe the tag was a fake.

If I could look at the car in person I could tell if it's real BB or not. All it would take is to look at the heater box and the insert that fills in the SB heater core holes. That piece is not reproduced correctly and the real things are rarer then hens teeth.

Looks like on of those under the hood hood locks.     ???

My trim tag is real, and I have the same red "PRIMER" inside my Hugger Orange car.

I compared the trim tag on my 69 Camaro with 12K original miles and found the fonts, stamp depth, rivets and offsets to be the same.  I have purchased several items from this seller over the last 13 years and have never been disappointed.  I personally believe this car and tag to be legitimate.

Really hard to call with the paint on it, but it generally looks reasonable. Would need a good pic to tell for sure.

I went to check this car out after seeing on ebay. The tag is untouched. More sooooo I was shocked when I got a good look at the car...I know this car very well ! I wasnt sure when I first took a look at.....but after a while I figured it out. I ran my BBC Nova against it many times. The owner was an idiot we could not believe he ran a real L-78 car almost every weekend at fountain ave(back then any thing went, but still a real L-78...no love)! He was a real nut....he had full slicks at the time and drove it daily with them. He would lay it out any time...did not give a @#$@. I dont know the seller and never purchased anything from him so will let that be known. I offered him what I wanted to pay, but the car had passed what I could pay...go take a look at it if you want and can afford an L-78 its an L-78.

There is ABSOLUTLEY no way to make a fake tag appear aged and weathered like this one.
Then you haven't seen some of the repro Camaro tags out there.......
