small block to big block
« on: March 27, 2008, 01:56:28 PM »
I have a 69 Camaro with a 350 4 spd.  I want to put in a 396.  I have the new motor mount plates.  I heard that the cross member is different due to the motor being dshifted to one side to clear the steering box.  Also, I see that the shifter needs a different mounting plate.  Is this so?  Where might I find the parts?

T3he crossmenber you got will work, A 400 Turbo is what has a different crossmember. but you do have to change the 4 speed mounting plate for the Big Block. You can get the plate about anywhere (Heartbeat City, NPD,SS396.com,Tamraz,Ebay,ETC.) They are usually around 99$. You also have to change P\S Brackets and Pump.

You will need the big block crossmember, shifter mount, and shifter rods. You can get repros from Ricks and others. You will also need the frame brackets for the engine mounts.

you can probably get away with a regular shifter bracket and rods, won't be perfect but will work
