Power Steering Pulley
« on: February 19, 2008, 01:43:56 PM »
New poster here!! I've been hanging out at Team Camaro, but now I realize my build seems to be taking a more "correct" direction. LOTS of good info here. A little background first: I'm beginning to gather parts for my engine, and I'm cloning the L30 set up for my '68 RS convertible. I didn't get an engine with the car, so I'm starting from scratch. Originality isn't a must, but I would like to do what I call "emulate" the factory.

Through my research here, I found there are two different PS pulleys for the '68 L30 and L48. Can anyone tell me what the difference would be? The L30 PS (non-smog) pulley is: 3860457CV and the L48 PS (non-smog) is: 3770509. Is there a difference with the diameter? The groove depth? Attachment with nut or not? Pulley throw? etc...

I have a donor pump that is supposedly from a '66 Chevelle 283 and it has the 3770509 pulley on it. Can I run this pulley? I have the correct '68 L30 pump mounting brackets.  Thanks in advance, Brian

The only difference between the 3860457 and 3770509 pulleys is the location of the track. The “509” pulley is about ¼ inch deeper. You should locate a “457” pulley if you are going to run the 327 PS brackets.

Or better yet get the 302/350 high performance type brackets for your car. There are several advantages the HP PS brackets have over the 327 brackets.

•   The pump bolts are easier to get a wrench on.
•   You can run an 8 inch balancer
•   They will work with interlocking motor mounts
•   Your “509” pulley is designed to work with these brackets

The reproduction 302/350 brackets are available for about $50

I replaced the 327 brackets with reproduction 302/350 brackets on my 67 so I could run the interlocking motor mounts and an 8 inch harmonic balancer.

With the 327 PS brackets it's a real pain to tighten the belt. Chevrolet should have used the 302/350 PS brackets on all 67-68 Camaros with V8’s.

Thanks Farm Boy!! I jumped on here tonight to post that I got an answer to my question from another source, and wanted to log it here for the search feature. Farm Boy is right, the offset on the pulley is different, and I can't run it with my other stuff.

Also, some good points about the HP brackets. I think at this point, I'm just going to get the 457 pulley to match my other stuff. Thanks again, Brian
