1968 L-6 250 CI fender emblem
« on: February 15, 2010, 01:23:06 AM »
Can anyone tell me what if any fender emblem was used on the front fenders of a 68 Camaro with a 250 six in it? My car is being prepped for paint and has a 327 engine in it right now. I have the original number matching six on an engine stand and I need to decide which emblems to drill the fender for. I would like to install the 327 emblems but wish that I could switch to the six cylinder emblem later if I want to go back to the original engine.

I have seen the 67 emblem with vertical color bars and the "250" number that goes on the flank of the fender and I have seen the 1969 250 number that goes on the front of the fender in the bumble-bee stripe but I can't find any reference to a 250 emblem on a 1968 car.

Any help?

Thanks, Mike.

It goes the same place as the 327 emblem on the front fenders about 1/2 way between the bumper and top of the fender.

In 1969 there was just the numbers "250" up front in the stripe where you say and I can find that emblem in any of the catalogs online. Why is it that I can't find any reference of that on the 68? Is the emblem the same as the 1969 "2 5 0" emblem? What is your source?

Thanks, Mike.

You need '68 "250" emblems for your car.  The '68 "250" fender emblems are different than the '69 "250" emblems.  My '69 Chevrolet P&A list the following part numbers for the '68 Camaro "250" fender emblem...

L.H. "250" emblem...  3927479  (Note 9)
R.H. "250" emblem...  3927480  (Note 9)

Note 9:  Requires 2-9419761 nuts for installation.

My reference is the "1967-1968 Camaro Reference Book" by John R. Hooper. I also owned a 68 250 powerglide car that I bought from the original owner in the mid 70's and it had them.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for the numbers.  I'll have to do some research and see what I can come up with. I'm hoping that the 250 emblems have the same screw hole pattern as the 327 emblems and are interchangeable.

Thanks and yes that helps a lot. I started this day thinking that the 1967 badge with the vertical color bars was correct for my car. While I still haven't been able to find the right emblem you guys have set me straight on what I'm looking for.

Thanks!

Here's a picture of a 68 with the 250 emblem. It's not my car, just a picture I had. I'd encourage you to install that L6. I've been driving my two-owner, original everything 68 with the 230 L6 since 1988, I'd never consider changing the engine for a V8, there are tens of thousands of them. BTW, if your L6 has a smog system I'd be interested in seeing any pictures you may have. Thanks, Joe.

Joe:

Thanks for the pic. I am tempted to have the six rebuilt and put it in the car....so may decisions. I haven't looked at the six cylinder engine in a while but I do believe that it has the threaded holes for smog equipment in the manifold and they are plugged with bolts. The smog pump and plumbing is long gone. If you'd like a photo of the manifold I'd be glad to get that for you.

One more question here. Does anyone have the GM part number for the 1969 "250" emblem or can anyone tell me how it differs from the 68 emblem. The two look alike to me.

For anyone who might benefit from it I have some new information. I dug through some old books that I acquired when I first got the car in 1987 and found a pamphlet labeled "parts number service". It lists the 250 fender emblem located in the front area of the fender with two part numbers as follows:

Emblem 250 68 3927480-3970510

What's really interesting is that the next line reads

250 69 R/L 3970510

I don't know if the two numbers listed for 1968 are right and left or maybe early and late year? Notice that the second number listed for 1968 is the same as the number listed for 1969. So I'm not sure what it means but there it is. It looks as though  they used the 3970510 in both 68 and 69 but I still don't know if the hole patterns are the same.
