Help with 69 decode
« on: February 16, 2008, 05:48:55 PM »
Noob here but what a wealth of information. Can you guys help me with some options I haven't been able to verify. I have a 69 RS with the following trim tag and vin #124379n649609

st69  12437  nor335978bdy
tr712  50 50 pnt
05d x11 a

As I understand this information as a 69 RS car that intersting enough has factory air, a tilt colum, and the A after x11 designates power windows...which it has. My question is on the transmission though. I think this could be an SS car as well. I was told by the guy I bought it from that it used to have a 350 in it, but naturally he traded it. It has the oem front disc brakes and rear drums. The transmission is an automatic on the column followed up with an 10 bolt rear end. Does this sound like an RS/SS car and if so what specifically do I need to be looking for? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could have been an SS with a 10 bolt if it had the powerglide.

Is it a 2 or 3 speed automatic?
1 or 2 fuel lines?
Mono or multileafs?
What's the axle code? http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml#RearAxleNumbers

Kurt,

one fuel line, think it was a 3 speed, multi-leafs, and I have to do some more scrubbing to get the axle stamp. I'll do some more home work and post you back. Thanks for your help.

So would this car have a cowl hood and black stripes?

1 = Chevrolet
2 = Camaro
4 = 8-cylinder engine
37 = coupe body
9 = 1969 model year
N = Norwood, OH assembly plant
649609 = vehicle serial number sequence

Decode for body number: 335978

05D = Built the Fourth week of May.
69-12437 = Coupe.
NOR = Built in Norwood Ohio.
712 = Custom Black Bucket Seats.
50-50 = Car Color is Dover White
X11 = non-SS396, non-Z28, with style trim

Not sure why there is an A after the X11, but it doesnt mean A/C to my knowledge. Got a pic of the tag??

No cowl hood unless it was ordered.  Probably an RS.

Single fuel line and an X11 code means its not an SS.  Could be a 307/200Hp base coupe with style trim, or an L65 350/250HP car with style trim.  Could be an RS but doesn't have to be.  Since its not going to be an SS or Z28 the cowl hood was not available.  Could have black D90 of DX1 stripes, but they would have to have been ordered as an option and not included on the car as part of an other RPO.

Nope, the A means power windows.

With multileafs, this would have been a L65 car.

A  - signifies the car was equipped with power windows, but the code was not always used.

Probably why I havent seen many with the A code. Not many PW cars.

Thanks for the lesson :)
