69 LOS Z28

Looked at a LOS 69 Z today. BU rear, M21 both matching #s, 6K tach, Front disk brakes. Engine not on premises, suppose to have build sheet. Any way to verify ? Paint code was  - - (dash dash). What exactly does special order paint mean?

Means exactly that.  Could have been a non standard paint color, or in the case of a Z28 it could mean to delete the rally stripes.  The broadcast sheet may tell you which it was.

Could it not also mean black stripe on a car that normally would get a  white stripe?

My  LOS 69 is Garnet red with white stripes and a -- Paint code

Red69, so the default color with no vinyl top is black. Did you get your build sheet from the tank. Mine was wasted due to leaking trunk. My ss is --  and was hugger orange for sure. I think a black stripe or no stripe.

No such luck on the build sheet. I was told by someone who supposedly knows that the white stripes as opposed to black triggered the -- code. The base color is definetly Garnet Red

Thats the way  understand it, but it could also mean delete stripes. Do you know for a fact yours came with the stripes? Is yours a Z or is it hockey stripes?

Z-28 It came in original paint when I bought it in 75, and the white stripes appeared to be original

Yes the cowl was white. That must be why the special paint code, I believe that was done at the body factory. Right?

The top of the cowls on z cars and z10 and z11s were painted stripe color by fisher body. It is in the assembly manual under RPO Z28 sheet B1. It says " cowl vent grill area will be painted stripe color by fisher body " A line points to the area under the cowl panel. The Norwood cars stops under the cowl panel usually. The LA cars come all the way out to the edge of the firewall. A good way to ID an LA z or indy car.

The note in the Assembly Manual actually refers to the stripe paint on the cowl vent grille itself, not to the cowl structure area below it; the cowl vent grille was a Fisher Body part, and they painted the Z stripes on it. The difference in underhood appearance (visible stripe color on the cowl out to the firewall) results from Van Nuys using a different masking and spraying process for the stripes than Norwood used.

The  line from the notation in the assembly manual goes to the area under the cowl panel. My point was as you stated they just did it different at the two plants.

It seems I've seen pictures of Norwood Z's with alot of white over spray on the face of the firewall. My Van Nuys car had a pretty definitive line at the top of the fire wall. JohnZ would you mind elaborating on the two different plant procedures?

I don't recall the precise masking/spraying differences, but the front sheet metal at Van Nuys was hung on a separate carrier immediately ahead of the body; the Paint Shop there was combined (the old Chevy Paint Shop was abandoned when GMAD assumed control of the plant). Norwood was the traditional Fisher/Chevrolet arrangement where Fisher painted the body in their Paint Shop, and Chevrolet painted the front sheet metal in their own separate Paint Shop.
