The switch is on the steering column down past the Ign. Sw.If you don't have the back drive linkage hooked up you won't be able to activate the B/U switch.

Oh boy. please explain. back drive switch. Is that the on on the tranny?  Can't seem to find one for a 69. so, if I need the switch on the tranny, then that wire goes up front then to the back?  This electric shit always plays havoc with me..I don't have the "back drive linkage"... Thanks for your help steve.  Where can I get the right stuff? do you know? sorry I'm such a noob. :-\

The back-drive rod goes from the reverse arm on the trans. to a bell crank mounted on the frame below the brake booster or master cyl. Then a rod up to the column arm. This set-up activates the B/U lamp switch and locks the trans in reverse when the key is out.If you have headers installed there's no room for this system. You can get a switch and bracket to mount at the trans to activate the B/U lamps.Hurst has a universal part for this purpose or Heartbeat City #ELC1066.Steve.

The backup switch mentioned is located on a switch on the steering column under the dash. There is a slide contact that is moved when the car is shifted into reserve. This sliding is due to the lockout linkage moving the cloumn internals when the shifter moves into reverse. I am sure someone can explain this better.
This is for a 4 sp, btw.

See attached pic.  The rod connecting to the tranny is hanging down.  No trans in the car.

All transmissions use this system ,69 up.But if your not concerned with originality you can go with the universal transmission mounted switch.

It was a separate switch on the transmission through 1968 on 4-speeds, changed to the backdrive linkage arrangement shown when the new locking steering column was introduced in 1969.

Just cause I'm dumb. so, when you shift the floor shifter into reverse, The reverse rod is also attached to a rod that is connected to the steering shaft. Is this correct?? Is there a product sold that works only on the trans?  Man I'm dumb. ???
