There is a date code on the underside of the intake, under the splash shield.

First post, fantastic site.

I have a question about an intake that I have. It is a 198 from either a L-88 or a ZL-1. Casting date is 8.10.68. Now the tricky part. The last 2 digits in the part number "98" has been ground down and hand stamped "98." I have had this intake a long time. It came from a family member.
Did con-artists do this kinda stuff 40 years ago?

Colvins CBTN book documents this intake as being found with the numbers ground off and restamped.

Anyone think this is a legit intake? I can provide pics. I would just like to find out if this came from and engine? Or over the counter? or maybe a L-88? I highly doubt it was on a ZL-1. Or is it a fake?

Any comments?

Thanks

Probably an over-the-counter part - LOTS more of those were sold as parts than went on cars; less than 200 L-88's were built in '68-'69 (80 in '68, 116 in '69).
