1968 z/28 water pump fittings
« on: December 27, 2007, 01:23:29 AM »
JUST LOOKED AT THE UNTOUCHED 68Z/28 TONIGHT AND THE WATER PUMP FITTING HAVE ORANGE PAINT ON THEM. THE PUMP IS ORIGINAL TO THE CAR AND STILL HAS PAINT ON IT . THREE OF THE WATER PUMP TO BLOCK BOLTS ARE ORANGE ALSO,EXCEPT THE UPPER RIGHT BOLT /STUD WERE THE GROUND ATTACHES IS SILVER ZINC IS THIS CORRECT? EVERY RESTORED 67/68 Z HAS SILVER ZINC PLATED FITTINGS WITH NO PAINT. WHAT IS CORRECT? I AM RESTORING A 68Z AND IT IS GOING TO CARLISLE TO BE JUDGED AND I DO NOT WANT TO MISS ANYTHING.  THANKS

Sometimes the by pass hose and fitting were oversprayed with orange paint.  When we judge them at the Camaro Nationals, we like to see the fittings and hose with little or no overspray.  You will receive full credit if there is no overspray, and it's technically correct.

My low-mile '67 Z has orange overspray on the fittings, the by-pass hose and the by-pass hose clamps. Less orange as you got closer to the intake manifold. Virtually no overspray on the underside of the hose.

Flint V-8 used the same vacuum-formed plastic spray mask on the '67-'68 Z/28 that they used on the '63-'67 Corvette engines with high-rise aluminum intakes and bypass water pumps; I have lots of photos of untouched original Corvettes with varying degrees of orange overspray on the fittings, hose, and clamps. In NCRS Corvette judging, judges expect to see at least some level of overspray, although the deduction is very minor if none is present.
