Camaro 45rpm Record by The Cyrkle
« on: November 23, 2007, 02:32:02 PM »
For anyone who is interested, I now have an MP3-CD file on the 1967 song called Camaro recorded by The Cyrkle.  To my knowledge the Columbia masters have never been released to the public in CD form anywhere but thanks to a close friend who works at the XM radio studios in Wash DC, I now have a clean file that was made from an original mint condition 45 out of my personal record collection.  He ran it through some software and it now sounds like an original master tape.

If anyone is interested, I should be able to e-mail the file to you.

There are two versions of the original 45 and it came with a picture sleeve.  One 45 is SS396 backed with Camaro and the other is SS396 backed with Corvair Baby.  Both are very hard to find today, and with the picture sleeve it's very rare.

No, not a top 10 hit from 1967 but it's a cool song that's of the era.

Thanks, Jerry!  ;D

Cyrkle had two Top 40 hits, both in 66:
Red Rubber Ball made it to #2
Turn Down Day #16

I think they disbanded in 67 shortly after they did that promo single for Chevy...

I found this site which has the Cyrkle hits including Camaro. Red Rubber Ball was a very popular song back then.

Well music lovers, here's the whole hit career on The Cyrkle.

Biggest hit, "Red Rubber Ball", peaked at #2 in July 1966.  Was on the Billboard Top 100 charts for a total of 13 weeks.  "Turn Down Day", peaked at #16 in Sept of 1966.  Was on the charts for a total of eight weeks.  Writer of this song, David Blume is married to famous 1960s folk singer, Carolyn Hester.

"Please Don't Ever Leave Me", peaked on the Billboard charts at #59 in Dec 1966, was on the charts for a total of five weeks.  "I Wish I Could Be Here", peaked at #70 in Feb 1967.  Was on the charts for four weeks.  "We Had A Good Thing Goin'", peaked at #72 in May of 1967, was on the national charts for five weeks.  And last but not least, "Penny Arcade", peaked at #95 in Sept 1967 and was on the charts for a whopping one week.

All of this info comes from the Joel Whitburn Top 100 bible on popular music.

I actually do have their greatest hits CD and Camaro is not on it............

There it is, I wonder where they are now?

Career
The band was formed by guitarists and lead singers Don Dannemann and Tom Dawes (bass guitar), who met while studying at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. The other members were Earl Pickens on keyboards and Marty Fried on drums. They were originally a "frat rock" band called The Rhondells, but were later discovered and managed by Brian Epstein, who was better known as manager of The Beatles. Epstein's partner was New York attorney Nathan Weiss. Weiss heard the band in Atlantic City, New Jersey on Labor Day in 1965. He became their manager and renamed them.[1] John Lennon provided the unique spelling of their new name. They were produced by John Simon.

In the summer of 1966, they opened on fourteen dates for the Beatles during their U.S. tour. On August 28 they headed the opening acts performing prior to The Beatles at Dodger Stadium. The remaining artists who appeared were Bobby Hebb, The Ronettes, and The Remains.[2] Before touring with The Beatles, The Cyrkle had a successful engagement at the Downtown Discotheque in New York City.[3]

The Cyrkle is best known for their 1966 song "Red Rubber Ball", which went to #2 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was co-written by Paul Simon of Simon and Garfunkel and Bruce Woodley of The Seekers. It was released on the Columbia record label. The band had one more Top 20 hit, "Turn-Down Day" later in 1966. After the release of the debut album, Red Rubber Ball, they recorded a second album, Neon, in late 1966, and a movie soundtrack, The Minx, in 1967. They followed that with various singles, then disbanded in late 1967.

Both Dawes and Danneman became professional jingle writers following the demise of The Cyrkle. Dawes later wrote the famous "plop plop fizz fizz" jingle for Alka-Seltzer. Danneman wrote jingles for Continental Airlines and Swanson Foods. He penned the original 7-Up Uncola song.[4] In 1977 Dawes produced for Foghat.[5]

Jonesy,

Nice bio on the group.  One member has just died last month.........that's a shame.

I bought the "Reading Her Paper" 45 when it came out.  Was a song that me and my girl friend liked at the time.  This was March of 1968.  WCAO, the big AM station in Baltimore played it a lot but it never went anywhere.

BTW, this girl friend's brother had a brand new 1968 Corvette bronze Z28.  This car was part of the linkage that fueled the fire for me on the Camaro when I was in high school.

If anyone can tell me how to send a copy-protected mp3 file, I'll be glad to try and send it.
(I was born the year 45s were first produced, so mp3s are still a mystery to me.  The copy protection keeps me from transfering it to other programs.)

As for SS396 it is available (for a fee) on the web.

If anyone wants to listen to the song, you can go to youtube.com and type in "camaro cyrkle" and it will come up.  Also, if you are interested, type in "paul revere SS396" to get the other side of the the 45.
