Oil Fill Cap Location
« on: November 22, 2007, 07:13:58 PM »
They say there's never a dumb question   ???  but...

My 69 350 had the oil fill cap on the passenger side valve cover when I got it.   Seemed strange because the dipstick and hood lamp are on the drivers side.  I've seen pics with it on either side.

The car has cowl induction if it makes a difference, and basic orange valve covers.

If the cap should be on the passenger side, would the Tonawanda sticker be on the front of the passenger valve cover?

thanks for answers

All the pictures I've seen show the oil fill on the driver's side.

The oil filler cap goes on the drivers side (rear)
The  Tonawanda sticker goes on passenget side (front)
The oil dipstick is on drivers side.
If you look in the assembly manual, it is all there.  Many cars are incorrect.

And many cars had valve cover gaskets replaced and the cover put back on on the wrong sides.
DAL777 has it right.

???  Darn... I used silicone too.  No sooner put it on the drivers side and saw this survivor Z10 engine.  Texas Z10.   I know there are more out there with the oil fill cap on the passenger side.  I have several other pics.  Can't just be confusion when replacing the covers.

All I can say is I'm glad I have a 68.  I've never seen the oil fill on that side before.

Yes, it's confusion on the part of whoever removed them and re-installed them on the wrong side; the one with the oil fill cap goes on the driver's side. They can also be installed upside-down, so the pushrod end of the rocker arms hit the inside wall of the cover.

My thoughts are with you on this one JohnZ.  I guess it's hard to remember your left from right.

I can understand somebody making a mistake by putting the valve covers on the wrong side.  What I can't understand is leaving them that way once they realize/see that the PCV hose is no longer routed the correct way!     >:(

That may be a 107,000 mile Texas car but the covers are on wrong... (as is other things on it)...it also looks like they may be newer model covers.  Look at the factory assembly manual.....it is in there.

:)  OK so I am happy now.  I'm going to go with the consensus here and leave em where I put em....

I did look at the AIM but it is not an Engine assembly manual so I was not going to trust the sketches that relate to the installation of the other stuff...

Thanks guys for chiming in.

The A.I.M. makes it quite clear - see UPC 6, sheet B1.
