68 Z28 Front Bumper
« on: November 17, 2007, 05:29:26 PM »
Two Questions:
Any way to tell if the front bumper is a repro or original?

I have rear bumper guards but no front ones.  If it originally had the front ones, would there be holes in the front valance panel for these?  (Assuming the front valance panel is original).

I thought there were no factory bumper guards on 1968 Camaros?

Paul, do you have the front bumper guards on yours?  I was goning to ask on the other guys post but thought it better to post again.  I have two holes on the bottom of my bumper that don't show in AIM.  The left one has a bell shaped curve and I wondered if that could have been an outline of the bumper guard?  Also the hole to the right goes into the bumper bracket and I dont see that in the AIM.  Mine didn't have the bumper guards on the front, don't know if it supposed to and I don't know if this is the original bumper either.

Incorrect.

Items not available from the factory on any 1968 model included:
Rear sway bar
Radius rod/traction bar
Rear axle disc brakes
Small bumper guards (as used in 1967 and 1969)
Fuel return line
Cowl induction hood

You're right - but according to this site only the large bumper guards were available in '68

The bumper guards were not bolted to the bumper. The lower end is bolted to the valance, and the top uses a clamp to attach to the bumper. If the bumper had guards originally, there are usually scratches in the chrome where they were.

68Z -

Only the rear bumper guards are mandatory with the '68 Z/28 option.  The front bumper guards were available for any Camaro in '68 but had to be ordered separately (RPO V31).  It is very possible and O.K. if your car has only the rear bumper guards on it, many original Z/28 are like this.  As far as the photo of your front bumper (shown above), my front bumper has all the same holes in the area shown.  "JohnKY" is correct, none of the holes in the front bumper are used to mount the bumper guards.  See V31 in your AIM for the correct front bumper guard installation instructions.

I guess I'd have to see some bumper guards to see if they match up any marks on the bumper.  Trouble is, I don't know if the bumper is original or if the valance panel is either.  It has no holes for the guards, unless they are at the very bottom of it.

The bolt holes in the valance panel were drilled at assembly, as shown in the A.I.M. - if there are no holes, the car wasn't equipped with bumper guards originally (assuming the valance is original to the car).
