Gas tank straps on the 67
« on: September 09, 2007, 12:53:56 PM »
Were the tank straps painted black or left galvanized? Also was the insulator between the strap and tank felt or rubber?  ???

...originally I believe they were unpainted with felt (not rubber) insulators.

All the original cars I have inspected have had the straps painted black with no insulators under the strap. The felt insulators go on top of the tank.

Correct - The vendors somehow feel compelled to sell insulators that go between the straps and the tank, but the cars were never built that way; the insulators go on top of the tank, as shown in the Assembly Manual. :)

None of the factory built cars have insulators under the fuel tank straps.  That is something that resto places had marketed to the general Camaro public.  Most of the original cars that I've seen have painted black straps.

I still have a set of NOS straps with the tags and they are black and so are the orignal ones on my 67 and 69. I think every first gen had black straps, at least every original car I have seen.

I cant think of why they painted the straps unless they werent galvanized and wanted to prevent them from rusting. ???

The black NOS ones I have look like they have been dipped, just like front a-arms were dipped.

The straps were plain steel (not terne-plated like the tank was), and were dip-primed or flow-coated to minimize corrosion between the straps and the tank surface.
