JL-8 SURVIVORS
« on: August 30, 2007, 04:00:00 PM »
Friend and I recently acquired one-owner JL-8 car.  Anyone have info as to how many real JL-8 cars exist/remain?  Original JL-8 cars in CRG database?  Any JL-8 links/sites/registries?  Thanks

Roger that!  Anyone know of any database/registry of the "real" cars?

Kurt probably has that information.  Did you just buy that JL8 that was on Ebay(painted silver but originally green)?  If it's not that car, did you get any paperwork with it?  I'm wondering how many documented JL8 cars have been found.  I can roughly think of 30-40 JL8 cars I've heard about in the last few years but only a handfull seem to have any documentation with them.

I have heard that the over the counter JL-8 rears were different from the production rears. Anyone have info on this?

Pat,
The disc brake rear sold over the counter was actually referred to as the "service package" or "HD service package".  It was intended for racing and was a bit different from the "JL-8" disc brake rearend installed in cars at the factory.  The HD service rear has straight, larger diameter axle tubes to accomodate larger axle shafts.  The JL-8 rearend has tapered axle tubes, at the flange end.  Several books I know of that discuss the JL-8 are John Hooper's "The 1969 Camaro Reference Book" and Wayne Guinn's "Camaro Untold Secrets" books.  IMO, both books are a must have for Camaro enthusiasts, along with MacNeish's books of course.

Thanks for the info. Does it follow then that there are very few of the actual production rears out there? Should be easy to spot a clone

Does anyone know anything about a '69 RS/Z car, which was touted as a JL8 car, with crossram and tons of options (endura, blue light, spoilers, I think deluxe, gauges, etc). The car was black with black interior and the JL8 rear was an original rear and had the tapered tubes. The car was a matching numbered LOS car, which was owned by ED U back in the mid 1990's..

Anyone know what happened to it?

Was it real or anyone know the history of it?

gman ..... I looked at a JL-8 car similar to the one you describe but not exactly.  This car was an LOS RS car that was orig Lemans Blue but had been painted Black.  No crossram when I looked at it.  Jim @ Heartbeat City had this car back in Feb of '04.

I had a JL-8 car in the late '70s that does not seem to be "out there". It was orange with orange interior, standard hood, gauges. It had 15 x 8s painted white and well-done mild fender flares. I sold it to somone from FL and delivered it to his in-laws house in Chicago.

Probably sold new out of Dale Chevrolet in Waukesha WI.

Wow, what a great find, especially with all the orignal drivetrain and original owner. Are you going to restore it?

Did the original owner have any pictures of it back in the day?

William, that sounds like a cool car with that color combo. Wonder where it is now.
