I am beginning the restoration of a 67 rs camaro. I would like to rebuild the car as close to original as possible with the exception of color (butternut yellow). According to the cowl tag, it was a power glide car with the ralley sport option. I believe the car has the original rear end, but the motor and trans are long gone. Here is my first series of questions; Is there any way of telling the engine type? Do the engine block code numbers have to perfectly match the cars vin? Will any powerglide do or is there a specific one? It would be sweet if I could find the original motor and trans for the car. If someone would like to help the vin is 124377N156056, odd thing though the cowl tag reads 56022 not 56056,  build date 12c, I think this means 12th month 3rd week of 66 since production ends in August. The 3rd line on the cowl reads E 2MG 3SDL.

The 3rd digit of your VIN is even, so it came with a V8. Since there are no group 4 option codes on your cowl tag, it had to be a 327.  The LF7 (210 hp 2-bbl) outnumbered the L30 (275 hp 4-bbl) by 4 to 1. I'm pretty sure  that the 327's did not get the partial VIN stamp, so there would be no way to know if you found "THE" motor.The rear should be a 10-bolt. You should post pics of your tags for the experts here, they can give you more info than I.  E means tinted glass. group 2 M is powerglide trans, G is console. group 3- S is interior chrome pkge, D is aux. lighting, and L denotes rally sport. what is wrong with butternut yellow?

Thanks for your help. It's greatly appreciated. Butternut yellow is fine, but I think other colors suit the cars lines better (no offense LOL). I did'nt think the 4P codes began until the end of Dec. 66. My car was built just prior to that , 12C 3 rd. wk Dec. 66, but anyhow I've checked the rear end code and believe it's from a 68, not a 67. It reads PA0219G2 (PA= 3:08 10 bolt from 67 to 69). The casting date reads B98, which I think relates to Feb. 9th of 68. What do you think? Since I don't have the original motor or trans and its probably not a L30/M20 or an SS, should I have some fun with it? Maybe a 400 HP small block with a 12 bolt and suitable trans? Would it make the car worth any less when finished?

my 67 rs/ss is a 12d production and has the 4p on the trim tag.

Use of 4P began in late Dec. 66 to early Jan. 67 for L30/M20. Yours is certainly not L30/M20, because of the lack of an M20. Yours had a PG. Van Nuys started using the 4P code on the SS350 cars in September, but Norwood didn't start using the 4P code until October. So possibly L30, more likely LF7. In any case, do the car how YOU want it, the value will still be there, have fun.
