Engine coding question for Van Nuys '69 Z28
« on: June 04, 2007, 12:01:43 AM »
Would appreciate any help with answering some specific questions about a 1969 Z28 made at the Van Nuys plant.

Some facts - My VIN is 124379L510920. The trim tag on my car shows 11D for the production date. My engine code on the front pad is V1125DZ. There is no partial VIN on the engine pad, nor is there one by the oil filter. All other codes (block casting, transmission differential) match the vehicle. The casting code is 3932386. The date code is K228 (Nov. 22 1968).

Question 1: the Nov. 25 date on the engine pad is very close to the 11D date on the trim tag. Is this tight of a time frame possible, given that the engine was made 11/25/68 in Flint then installed at the Van Nuys plant?

Question 2: What typically explains the lack of a partial VIN on the engine pad or by the oil filter on an early production 1969 Z28? Is this possible? Without the partial VIN stamped anywhere on the engine is there any way left to validate that my engine is the specific one the car was originally produced with?

Thanks very much-

Justin

I am sure Kurt S will jump in and help, but the 11/25/69 was the at the begining of the 11D week. 11D was not when the car was finished but was when the order was accepted to build the car, if I said it correctly. It is entirely possible that an 11/25 engine could be on a 11D car. It was a few days before the body was ready for an engine. The 11/25 engine may not have been installed until almost 2 weeks later, the end of the next week or later. My 02D car has an early March differential.

I have an V1I19DZ that has the VIN 19L511097 by the oil filter. Not in the original car though. They are very hard to see sometimes.

It took about 3 days for the car to go from a pile of sheetmetal parts to a rolling chassis ready to accept the engine and transmission.  The 11D week probably ran from Monday 11/25 to Friday 11/29.  So the body could have been started anytime during that week.  Your VIN is after the last reported VIN built in November (L510583) so your car was finished late in the day Monday 12/2/68 and the engine was probably installed late in the day Friday 12/29/68.  It took roughly 2 days to ship an engine by rail from Flint to LA so an 11/25 built engine is definately possible for your car.
