'67 steering column wiring
« on: May 17, 2007, 06:15:31 AM »
I am swaping out the standard steering column in my '67 Convertible (floor shift) for a rebuilt tilt column.  The rebuilt unit is pre wired so all I have to do is transfer over the steering wheel and the bracket.  Here's my problem:  the original column wiring has nine (9) wires in the following order:
White
Green
Yellow
Purple
Brown
Dark Blue
Light blue
Black
Grey

The wiring on the rebuilt tilt unit has Eight (8) wires in the following order:
White
Green
Yellow
Purple
Brown
Dark Blue
Light blue
Black

Near as I can tell from a quick study of the AIM wiring diagram..the grey wire loops into the dash lights...am I wrong?  If not, why is it going to the steering column?   Can I connect up to the under dash harness withoutt eh grey wire and not cause problems?  The under dash connector has only eight (8) wires and none of them are grey...why was the grey (ninth) wire there in the first place?

Any input appreciated...

Don't worry about the grey wire. It's only required for standard (automatic transmission) columns, and only for the shift indicator lamp.

Thanks ED, that was starting to be my impression but didn't want to muck up a systemt that otherwise works fine.
