For those who like rare stuff check out ZL-1 #68. It is the only 69 known to have been built with the DX1 stripe and a ducted hood.

I was referred to this thread after posting the 'DX1 stripe question' in Originality to view the rare, one-of-a-kind ZL-1 wearing this stripe. I didn't notice this at first but since it is an RS and not an SS badged car shouldn't it have 'rallysport' on the fender, not 'Camaro'? Is this the factory original way of badging a ZL-1?

Would a stripe delete Z/28 or SS be a - - special paint code on trim tag? How would the assembly line know not to paint the stripes?

I'm confused, if a COPO order started with an SS then pulled off the SS emblems, why is it badged with RS on the grill? I thought all SS cars with the RS treatments were always badged SS front and back along with the fenders. Is this a one-of-a-kind treatment reserved for the ZL-1 or could other SS cars come factory badged RS? So this car has the SS holes filled in on the fender?

Because the COPOs are not SS's.  They started the assembly process with SS options but ended with base Camaro (or RS it so ordered) emblems.  On a normal Camaro SS badging over rode RS emblems when the car was ordered as an SS with the RS option.

"The remainder of the car was built using standard assembly procedures and components as employed on a Camaro SS with the L78 engine, with some other exceptions. A document titled "Exception control letter sheet" was used to outline parts that were to be deleted and / or substituted from the SS L78 package. One example is the starter: an L78 used an 11" clutch, the ZL-1 used the 10.34", and so starter 1108418 was replaced with 1108351 on the 4-speed and 1108400 on the automatics. This system also explains why COPO's built as rally sports do not have the rally sport fender emblems. The "Camaro SS" badging was initially specified and the document "deducted" the SS, leaving only the "Camaro" emblem on the fender. There was no external indication of the engine. Assembly line workers wrote "427" in crayon on the inside of the fender extensions so the fenders would not be pierced for emblems as all other 8 cylinder Camaros were. All ZL-1 cars were equipped with AIR pumps and Gibbs' cars were produced with standard N10 dual exhaust."

Thanks for explaining this curious oddity and pointing me to the COPO article, somehow I missed that.

With the absence of engine size on the fender along with the non-blacked-out tailpan, the ZL-1 must have been quite the "mystery car" before hearing it running. This was one major "sleeper"!!!

hi, new to this section of this great site. have been posting over on the trans-am thread. I live in ontario canada. don't know if this is the correct spot for this question ?  in 1970 a friend of mine had a 69 z/28, frost green, no spoilers & no stripes. I remember when I first saw it, I thought it had been hit and re-painted. the car came out of illinois. is there any documentation as to how many stripe & spoiler delete cars were built.

Spoilers were optional until early April '69. At that time they were included with Z/28 equipment and the option price increased to $506.60.

There is no way to know how many Z/28s were built without spoilers or striping.

  Yes it was!  For most, the only signs was to hear it run, or open the hood.
