L6 cylinder head data for a new report
« on: July 03, 2023, 01:13:35 PM »
I am working on a report for 67-69 Camaro cylinder head usage. I have the SBC and BBC numbers pretty much done, but I am struggling a bit with the L6 heads.

I assume that the 230 and 250 engines used the same head and probably the same casting number all 3 years, but can any of you verify?

Include
1. The head casting number
2. The casting date
3. Year of the engine.

Thanks in advance. If you photos are used, you will be giving credit.

Engine bock assembly stamp is F0402LN

1968 Convertible, 250 engine. Car built on Nov 8, 1967.
I have 4888 first, in the middle its 890, near the front its 4888 F 18.
Block date is G257, So July 25, 67.

The block casting is 3921967. If you look on the CRG Engine Casting Number chart, for an L6 for 1968. it only shows 3921968. Could that be an
omission?

Thank you both!

It has been a LONG time since I have been around the L6 engines. Did you get these numbers from the outside of the head or from under the valve cover?

I did finally find a reference after doing some searching.
https://www.inliners.org/tech/heads/headindex.htm

Not sure if the full casting number might be under the valve cover?

Well the data on 6 cylinder heads for the report may just have to be left as incomplete for now and updated later.

3864886 is the only one verified so far.

Thank you David.

Is there anyone else you know with an original L6 that might have a different casting number?

Not aware of any . The very few I have seen all end in 1968...I thought that was on purpose but doubt it. It would make sense when ypu make revisions.

So your head casting number ends in 7763 ?

Then the full number would be 3927763.

The pics shown are fine. Who gets photo credit if I use any of the pics?

That shows the partial casting number externally and verifies another one used for Camaros.

Paul,
3921967 looks like a valid block number. Not common from my limited experience.
What's the engine stamping (by the distributor)?
Could the 4888 head # actually be 4886?

That doesn’t seem to be the correct spot.

Look from the top, passenger side, between the area of the dipstick and the distributor.

That's the right spot. It's possible the layers of paint make it impossible to see. That wirey thing to the right is the distrhold down clamp.

It’s CQ 250ci/155HP L22 - thanks!

I am not sure that head was used on 250 cubic inch engines. It may be original.

It has a smaller combustion chamber and hotrodders would swap heads out to gain compression. Do you know for sure if the head is original?

Funny that you are questioning the head. When we got the car, the valve cover was black and the oil cap was the older style upside down cup type, not the flatter style. Sorry, I don't know the proper names. I've never seen a Camaro 250 with a black valve cover, so we repainted it orange. That's all I know about it.

It was mentioned That the head my not be original. Can you please elaborate or tell me where I can find the information. Just a sidebar, it doesn't have a mono leaf suspension. It has a muti leaf. Why would someone change it on a six cylinder?  Just wondering.

Find what information?  We are researching the use of heads, trying to learn. If you can take the valve cover off, you might find a casting date. It SEEMS that the head you have was used on 194 cubic inch engines. So far we can not find use on a 250, but it is POSSIBLE. That is why we are asking. If we can find it being used on others, then we will know.

As stated above

It has a smaller combustion chamber and hotrodders would swap heads out to gain compression.

That is not directly on topic, but at least for 1969 that seems to be true based on GM numbers.  A 250 cubic inch car is supposed to be 17 pounds heavier than a 230.  I have also been working on another report that compares height, weight and other dimensions for each year - along with some other factoids that may be of interest to a few.

The casting numbers might be in a book called

Chevrolet-Inline-Six-Cylinder-Power-Manual

If any of you have that and could look to see if there might be some casting numbers and usage in there, that would help. Otherwise I might have to buy a copy.

Casting: 3927763.  I guess I don't know where to look for casting date on heads - kind of dirty from sitting for 35 years.  Car was 1969 model totaled in 1988 still have 230 engine.  VIN 123379N545064.  Engine pad does not have VIN # only the assembly date/eng code part is stamped.  Have protect-O-Plate, my aunt bought car new in 1969 and I was second /owner.  Car was Torque Drive 2-speed auto (Powerglide without the modulator) had to shift from 1-2 and 2-1 on column manually - engine coded 'F1112AN' and has yellow AN written on rear of block.  Block casting number 3921968, date K 11 68.

Jerry, thanks for posting those pics!

The head casting date and a partial casting number should be in the area between the valve springs and the side of the heads. See pic.

Also I think it would be cool in you could post a pic of the yellow AN writing.

ok thanks, the casting date is probably near this "763" I took a pic of yesterday, I'll get back over to the building where it's stored in a week or so and look closer and get that.  Also here's pics of the 'AN' (appears upside down when engine in normal position).

Do you see 7763 cast on the outside of the head toward the rear between the spark plugs?

Yes, I did happen to get a pic yesterday of the 7763 on outside of head - think it was on left side, then didn't see anything in the next spot (center) then on the right it had 41F 5060. here are pics left to right (obviously on the side of head w/o intake/exhaust):

Just got home. 16 hours of driving. Let me know what else you would like out of the red Santucci manual

I will take a closer look but so far doesn’t say anything specifically about Camaro use, correct?

I see no mention of Camaro anywhere in the book.

Bryon (bcmiller) - I got the casting date of my head posted about earlier on 10/09, it is K 9 8.  So block was K 11 8 and stamp on pad is F1112AN. So head was cast Saturday Nov. 9, 1968, block was cast Monday Nov. 11, 1968, and engine was built Tuesday, Nov 12, 1968.  Amazing to me that parts moved that fast but I've never studied it that closely before!  Sure many have seen similar.  I do have a matching numbers 1971 Nova I'm going to check out the casting dates of 350 block vs heads vs pad stamp vs TH350 vs vehicle VIN...
