Orange stripe on RS vacuum hose
« on: June 12, 2023, 08:38:41 PM »
30 years later and nobody makes the orange striped hose from the headlight switch to the relay. Inline Tube sells color striped hoses, but not orange. I called tech support…”yes we stripe the hoses, no we won’t  make an orange one.”
As I understand, the Legends cars now require the orange stripe. 🧐🧐🤔🤔🤔

I used a tire ink pen off amazon…turned out good and passed judging at Bloomington Gold.   Tire Ink Paint Pen for Car Tires Permanent and Waterproof Carwash Safe (1 Pen, Orange) https://a.co/d/2yD5bSn

If you zoom in on the pic you can see it.

Used a different pinstripe stencil kit that left no bleeding under, spray painted 3of them with artistic pro paint, and I can live with it. I can’t live with aqua, pink, and pale yellow stripes. Stay tuned.

Cook….thanks…..the width is 1/16th but my original hoses are long gone. I replicated the width from my 1993 reproduction set that’s still on the car. The paint is so good from that set I couldn’t get it off the hose, I just prepped and painted over the red stripe that goes to the headlight switch. The new kit paint rubbed off with my thumb.

Indy-Thank you for he pictures! I vaguely remember seeing the zippered yellow hose at some point forever ago, and am pretty sure replicating that is damn near impossible. It looks to be 1/8” but can’t really tell. At this point I’ve got the process down to a science, and am going to bring some with me to Morgantown for comparison hope to to fine tune the colors and get the correct width. That other hose that’s next to the red hose looks yellow, but should be green. If you could get some better pictures next time I would appreciate it. I also found a thread from last year that you posted some pictures in, and the yellow looks approximately 1/8” wide, so I’ll redo them. The white striped I believe is a a vacuum hose from the intake.

Paint looks good. I saved my original hoses. I will have to dig them out and see what the striping looks like. I have a VanNuys car 11B.

The 90's repop hoses were not high quality rubber. They would split at every connector. I still have them on my car. Not sure how the new hose kits are

Jones, if you could measure the width of the stripes that would help. Obviously the aftermarket is garbage but I've given the hoses a few coats of Mequiars rubber hose liquid love. They look nice.

Those hoses look great. Very creative idea with tire pen. Never even heard of a tire pen. I guess I am damn lucky that my RS Z still has the factory hoses.

I found a pile of OLD hoses from My Pace car, Red, Green, Yellow, The Orange is still in the car.
I took a few photos; off the top of my head.
Red & Green = 0.125"
Yellow = 0.250"

Thank you!!! 1/4” is fat. I’m pretty sure the orange is the same width as the green and red that go to the actuators, but wasn’t sure if the red and green fatter hoses on the relay valve had a wider stripe than the orange and smaller than the yellow. If you can verify those, I’d appreciate it.

Sixt9 and Jonesy, I’m waiting on you 2 yutes for some pictures and measurements.

There are what appears to be significant differences in hose colors and the zippered/non zippered pattern on the yellow striped hose.  I made a trip back to the local art store and the manager and I spent about an hour looking and attempting to match colors from the posted pictures of what they most likely resembled before fade/time/weathering dulled them out. Below is what we came up with. It’s just a mock-up but I think it’s darn close. Plus the width is correct. I guess in 11 days I’ll know.

I'm gonna guess that is a result of either a warn paint head felt or it could just be that the peak of the hose while being applied has a wash-out (yes I just made that up) causing the applicator to dry (not stay as lubricated) in the middle due to contact with the surface of the hose and that's what you are seeing as a 'zipper' effect..

Did a mock-up to see how it looks and I’m pretty happy with it. Thanks again to those who helped out!! Especially those with pictures and measurements. I’ll also post some when it’s all reassembled.
I’ve done 5 sets so far—2 for others who are following this thread, the set I put on my car in 1994 which was still in excellent shape, and 2 extra due the guy who had 1 job to do….not doing it.
After several trial runs, DOHS!, spending more quality time with the manager of the local art store, changing to a different paint brand, chasing down my neighbor due to the stencil striping being delivered to him instead of me and more, I can do it in my sleep.

Dave let's talks 1968's (Z22) RS Vac systems.

Specifically , I think Ed  or others made me aware of deviation F-413, Tank and valve problems from the start of production.

I will scan and post the letter. This might be a bit off topic maybe

All,

I ran into and met DaveK at the Camaro Nationals this year. We discussed the process how we applied (reworked) the correct paint color on the orange RS vacuum feed hose between the head light switch and the RS relay switch mounted to the reserve vacuum tank on a ’69 Camaro.  I need to give credit to Edgemontvillage (Lloyd Crosley) over on Camaros.net and is Brooklyn Project, an outstanding restoration on this '69 RS Z28.  I copied his process to prep and paint the hose.

Since my RS feed hoses were already cut to length and installed, I had to remove them from the firewall along with the firewall grommet as an assembly. That allowed me to measure how long to the two vacuum hoses extend from the grommet and then reinstall them to the same length after painting the orange stripe hose.

Steps:
1.) Cleaned the hose with Xylol Xylene, an enamel paint thinner that is milder than lacquer thinner and does not harm the rubber hose.
2.) Stretched the hose along a 2x4 and clamped it on both end using a Philips screwdriver in both ends of the hose.  As shown below, I clamped the screw drivers to the board to hold the hose in place and straight along the board.  Don’t over stretch the hose but pull it snug to keep in place without rolling to the side.
3.)  I had leftover pin stripping tape that had the approximate correct gap width as the existing stripe on the hole. I applied the pin stripe tape along the entire length of hose.
4.) Used making tape to hold the hose down to the board and mask the hose from paint except the gap between the pin stripe tape.
5.) I used the same Liquitex paint DaveK shows above in Reply #6. I purchased it from a local Hobby Lobby Store.
6.) Placed a small dab of paint on cardboard and ran a foam paint roller (1" dia. x 4" long) thru the paint. The goal is to get enough paint in the roller to apply several light coats but not apply the paint too thick.  Apply enough coats of paint to get good coverage.
7.) The Liquitex paint skins (dries) quickly. While the paint is still tacky to the touch, peel the tape from the hole so dry paint does not chip away from the edges of the masking tape. Paint that is still lightly wet will leave a crisp clean paint line (an old painter's tip...I used to paint residentially!)
8.) Allow the color paint stripe to fully dry and cure over night before installing (or reinstalling) the hose in the grommet and into the car.
9.) Carefully insert the grommet, with both hose pre-installed in the grommet, through the firewall. Carefully work one lip around the grommet into the hole in the firewall.  Patience is key for this task!  You can work from under the dash into the engine bay or vice versa depending on the state of the build of the car.  It’s a real "bi%*H*" to work from the engine bay if the brake booster and master cylinder is installed.  If they are installed, you can remove the brake booter mounting nuts, pull and tie the booster/master cylinder forward to gain access down along the firewall.

The pics attached are in the sequence I did the work.

Good Luck!
I hope I never need to do this task again…LOL!
