69 z-28 special stripe
« on: November 07, 2022, 02:25:40 PM »
If you purchased a new 69 Z-28, back in the days, could you order a special stripe from the dealer?
Back in the 80's, a coworker had a 69 Z-28, 302, 4 speed, 4.10 gears, chambered exhaust, Dover white and only 1500 miles.
There were two gold stripes, one on each side, that were below the body line, and ran from the lower rear of the fender, lower door and ended right before the louvers. They were above the rocker panel. He told me he ordered the car this way.
I didn't want to question him, because he bought the car, but I just didn't understand how he got the stripes, when this wasn't a factory option.
Thank you

Neither assembly plant had the means, equipment or time to add custom stripes to cars, so no, it wasn't available from the factory.

Thank you, another question, if you ordered a Z-28, were the stripes an option or was that part of the package?

I always thought is was part of the package.

If at the time when he ordered this car, could the dealership add custom stripes?

The "Rally Stripes" were part of the Z28 package, but they could be deleted (actually, just not applied) if the person (or dealer) that originally ordered the car didn't want them.

Yes, the ordering dealer (or any dealer, or even any paint shop for that matter) could have applied them after the fact.

I'd expect the answer to land in the middle, as Ed said.  Similar, perhaps, how someone "ordered" a new 68 Camaro 427 from Baldwin, et al.  They indeed order that car, but it didn't ship from GM with the 427.  The stripes may have been similar ... might have been something that dealership offered, promoted on new cars it sold.
