hood/headliner insulation question-1969 Z28

Did a 1969 Z28 come with hood insulation if it didn't have the cowl induction setup?  My Z28 has the hood scoop w/302 emblems but no cowl induction air cleaner.   

Did the car come with insulation above the headliner? 

I am starting to restore it for the 2nd time (I've had it for 40 years) and want to get it right.

Ducted hood & deluxe interior cars got an under hood mat. The roof does have some sort of fiber board attached to the inside of the roof. Was you car built duing the time frame when ducted hoods were available? A large percentage of them had flat hoods? Restoring a car back to right can take some people to a place where some aren't happy with. My X66 car had no style trim, no ducted hood, no spoilers, no power windows & no rally sport. Move the front antenna back to the rear. Lots of holes to fill..Joe

Joe,
I attached a photo of the car.  When you say ducted hood, do you mean the raised part in the middle?  If so, I have it, and it was original.  It didn't have insulation in either the hood or above the headliner but I will add it if it could have been there or if it is recommended.  I live in Florida, so especially for the headliner it should lower the internal temp on a hot day.  My car was built in July 1969.

So that means to do it correctly the quarter louvers & wheel lip moldings would need to go away. I can't tell if it has rain gutter chrome but if it does, it would need to come off. X77 had no style trim group...Joe

More great info, thanks. Do you know if selling dealers offered and installed the louvers and wheel lip moldings?

Z21 Style Trim Group also included bright trim on the headlamp bezels and tail lamps, black paint on the rocker panels for most colors. Included D96 fender striping except SS and Z/28.

RS included much of the Z21 trim.
Learning more and more about less and less...

I just finished reviewing the Brooklyn project.  Amazing detail for restoring every major part of the Camaro, and for Lloyd to take the time to document, photograph, and post all of it for others to share is truly exceptional.  Thanks for sending.

All,

One indication to determine if the hood is original to the car: check to see if it is date coded on the vertical side flange in the driver's side back corner that faces out to the side of the car.  To my knowledge and research, most all the factory installed hood regardless of the hood style (flat, ZL2 cowl induction hood, or SS hood) are date coded.  It can be difficult to see and primer and paint might have filled in the digits. 

The body trim plate on my '69 Norwood build RS Z28 is "05A" for the 1st week of May.  My Camaro includes an original ZL2 hood dated "18" for the 18th week in 1969 which mean the hood was fabricated between 4/28 - 5/4/1969. Unfortunately I do not have the original paperwork, POP, etc. so I cannot be 100% sure this ZL2 hood is original to my car, but the corresponding dates code are a good indication it is the original hood. My car is loaded with options so whoever originally purchased my Camaro check nearly all the option boxes! 

YES....I do have the NCRS shipping data report and the original selling dealer, Glockner Chevrolet in Portsmouth, OH which is still in business and an interesting story!  Unfortunately they had a warehouse fire and lost much of their old sales and service history.  That was a big bummer.

I am not at home at the moment to share a picture of my date coded hood, but I found these two examples in my phone. These pics were take this past May 2022 at the Mecum Indy auction. Both of these '69 Camaro were very original and unrestored cars which were great to review and photo document.

The white hood (SS hood) is from a '69 SS Norwood build "05A" car with a "14" dated hood.

The yellow hood (flat hood) is from a '69 Z28 Norwood build "04C" car with a "13" dated hood.

As you can see, the parts did not sit long in line side stock before they were pulled for use. I find this to be the situation on most all the original date coded components on these original survivors!

My car is a 07A car, and I just received the NCRS doc showing the official production date as 7/3/69.  Attached is a photo of the corner of the hood, I can't make out any numbers. Were there any original hoods that did not have the number?

It’s possible that some original hoods may not have been dated coded. I can only share that all the Chevys and Pontiacs I have reviewed so far that appears to be original survivor cars, the hoods were dated coded.

Great pics Dave of the original ZL-2 hoods.

JST it is more likely your hood is an over the counter GM unit. I have looked over many original unrestored cars, and I have observed the assembly line hoods to have the date. As mentioned some of them had paint in that area so it is hard to see it. The hood was very popular and MANY guys went to the parts counter and ordered the hood to add to their 1st gen Camaro, whether is was a 67,68, or 69, and it didn't matter if it was a Z, SS, or base car. It is somewhat rare to see a 1st gen let alone a 69Z without the ZL-2 hood now a days. You car though, you can keep the X33 trim and the ZL-2 hood or make the switch back to X77 and locate a flat hood to spray up for your car, and swap them at will, then hang the other in your shop. Congrats on the 69Z. 🙂

Jim, I wasn't in the market to replace the insulation so I can't speak to what's available beyond the well known Dynamat / Hushmat type products.

Looks like the same material used on the upper seat back, of a rear fold-down seat.  I could not find anything similar a few years ago.

I spoke with the guy who owned my car from 1976 to 1978 today and he confirmed he did add the cowl hood, wheel well chrome trim, and louvers.  Thanks to all, the info you provided was exceptional and completely accurate.

That is cool you have a contact that had the car back then. Was he able to provide who he bought the car from? or did he have any of the paperwork. Keep tracking it down as much you can you never what will turn up. 🙂

I bought the car from a friend in Tampa in 1982, and at the time I had another friend who worked at GMAC and was able to get me all of the Florida title history.  I did nothing with the docs until recently.  My friend owned it from 1978-1982, and I searched the name of the 1976-1978 owner (he still lives in FL in the St. Pete area) from one of the titles and actually found a phone number for him.  Was he surprised when he got a call 44 years later, but we had a great conversation and he remembered a lot about the car.  My car does not have the original DZ engine block, and he told me he was the one who replaced it but said he did use the internal parts from the 302.  I am starting a 2nd restoration (first was in 1982, but I had 3 young kids and not much money back then) and am keeping him updated on progress.  The car came to Florida from Connecticut in 1974, and I am still trying to contact the lady who owned it then.  CT DMV has been no help, so I'm trying anywhere else I can.  I got my NCRS letter recently, and found the car was originally delivered to Louisiana.  I called the Chevy dealer, who is still in business in the same location (since 1931), and actually spoke with the owner who started working for his dad there in 1970.  Again we had a great call, I sent him some photos, but he has no records that old.  So far a fun search, and I'll continue until I complete the timeline.
