I installed a new Holley black pump (140 gph) on the rear frame rail of my 69 Camaro.  I understand that there should be some "whining", but wow is this thing loud.  It is way more than just a whine.  Is this normal?  I installed a rubber pad between the frame and mounting bracket but this did not help at all.  Is this sound normal or should I exchange it for another one.  Also, is there any other electric pump out there that is quieter.  If so, I will return this one and get one that doesn't sound like I have a mariachi band in the trunk.  Unfortunately, the 502 does not take a mechanical pump.

Okay, I have come up with what may be an answer to my own question and would like an expert to verify my solution before I impliment it.  I notice the pump quiets down a little after the car is running.  The pump is at its noisiest when I first turn the key before the motor starts.  So, if I add a return line, will this quiet the pump down?  My thinking is that if the pump is not trying to push fuel that is blocked by the regulator and lack of carb not taking it, then the return line will relieve the pressure that is built up thus making the pump "happier" and quieter.  This logic works for my wife, so maybe it will work for my fuel pump too.  Does this make sense?

If so, please let me know.  If I don't get a response well then darn it...I'm going to do it anyway and find out, so there.

it makes sense. most modren systems use a return line, but im no expert.

I would think a return line connected to a modern regulator, to allow excess fuel to return. I am looking to efi my little 307, and will need to plumb a return line for that. This may in turn require tank mods. Please keep us posted.

Electric fuel pumps will whine and carry on , loaded against psi, until you start moving some fuel or start motor, they quieten down .    Normal,  Thats why I dont like the red or blue Holley pumps.   I believe for a street car, 140 gph is almost an overkill, unless you got lots of motor and big carb.   I believe that in stock form , the stock AC pumps deliver something line about 40 gph at pressure?      I am running a 100 gph with 6 psi on a dual feed holley.   Thats just my .02 on this.

The stock AC pump fed L-88's with no problem; you decide if you need more fuel delivery than an L-88.  Smiley

That's my point.  Thanks.  I only used the large electric pump as it has an internal bypass where the larger holley pumps dont'.

I installed a holley 803bp regulator and a return line and it did seem to help quiet my complaining electric pump a little, but not much.  Fortunately, the exhaust is louder so you can now only hear it upon initial turning the key startup.
