tic toc tach wiring
« on: April 19, 2007, 04:51:28 AM »
Can anyone help with the dash wiring details for a 1968 tic toc tach?

I have the Brown lead at the negative side of the coil but the hook up at the tach terminal is orange. The tach has a pin type terminal and when the harness was installed I only saw one possible hook up (the orange wire) which has a sort of pass thru clip connector.

Thanks

Arno

Arno -

I just took a look at my '68Z which also has a tic toc tach.  Mine is wired like this:

Positive side of the coil = black & white wire (ballast) + yellow wire

Negative side of coil = brown wire

I just peeked under my dash and yes there is an orange wire with a black plastic connector as you describe going to the tach terminal.

This is what I have....brown wire at coil neg going to bulkhead connector with orange wire with 90 deg black connector to the tach inside the dash, like the cig lighter but 18 ga wire not 14 ga.

OK now why doesn't this tested tach not work? Am i missing a ground wire? There was one that i connected to the lower center screw on the cluster. Maybe this was not enough?

Arno,

The orange wire is for the clock. The Tach itself is powered by the PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD and has no wires.

Thanks Ed!  In my eagerness to help out I assumed the orange wire was for the tach.  But after re-examinig it, you are correct.  Haste makes waste!   :P

You are correct as usual. FYI you need to provide power and ground to the PBC for the tach to work. I forgot that.
