Original colors of 1st gen Camaros
« on: February 04, 2022, 07:07:10 PM »
So I have been looking at the CRG exterior paint page and the percentages of color used. I know GM used various names of colors, marketing and repackaging cars to look or sound new I am sure is part of this. Or a different name just for the Corvette buyer. I am specifically curious about the color themselves though. For instance was 67 Matador Red, the same as Bolero Red? or maybe they were different but Bolero Red may have been the same as Garnet red? or all three were different shades. I don't know if buyer tastes changed but I do see the percentages of colors change year to year and was curious if it was marketing or if it was the real color(s) that changed year to year. thanks  (I am not sure if this has been discussed before)

Yes, they were different colors based on different formulas, but if you ask me, THEY ALL LOOK RED!!

Bert that link is a classic, I had never seen it before...😆.

Thank you for the info. So does it go to reason for a specific model like the 1st gen Camaro that if the color got a new name it was a different mixture? And the only way to know if a repainted car got it right is comparing it to a known original? Also was there any variance in a color during the model year that has been seen? For example on a 66 Triumph Bonneville the 'Grenadier red' stripe on the tank can look orangey red on some bikes and a darker red on others, (factory painters varied the mix during the year). thank you for the help.

Apparently names were different between models but the formula was the same (see below for 1968 examples)

Chevrolet Seafrost Green Metallic
Buick Tarpon Green Metallic
Oldsmobile Silver Green Metallic
Pontiac Springmist Green Metallic

They all used the same formula (4897L / 48970)

Thank you for that. (I also noticed on the CRG paint page, that the 69pace.com link currently does not work)

Also…

I think Lemans Blue was the same 68 and 69.

Bolero Red and Matador Red were not the same.

68 - 69 Lemans blue are different colors
From 2017 discussion here...
The 1968 color was GM WA3742, while the 1969 color was GM WA3962

Yes, sorry about that - you are correct.

The formulas are similar but they do use a couple of different tints.

Seems kind of stupid to me to have made a change, but whatever.

Agreed pretty nonsensical to make the change - ESPECIALLY given that the 68 color was only used 7 months.

Thank you for the clarification on colors. The white had looked the same to me, but I have never seen them side by side.

So all three red colors were different year to year as well?

69 red is very dark. 67/68 are closer.

'69 Camaro "Hugger Orange" is actually "Carousel Red" on a Pontiac and "Monaco Orange" on a Corvette.

I think "Monaco Orange" also applies to Chevelle SS models.

I always imagined Marina Blue was the same as Lemans Blue.
