CE Block, Flint or Tonawanda?
« on: November 07, 2021, 08:21:37 PM »
I have a CE block that I'm considering using for a '67 302 build and have realized that the sequence number falls into the Tonawanda assigned range base on the Chevrolet Dealer Service Information Bulletin, 69-I-1,dated 19 Sept,1968. Other indicators point toward this block being cast and assembled at Flint such as a square-head 1/8" NPT plug and assembly date stamp including a "V".

Here is the block information:
Casing number: 3892657
Casting date: J127
Pad stamp: CE8 54915
Assembly date: 10 7 V

This block was cast and stamped well before this Service Bulletin was issued, provided that the CE stamp is legit.
I would like to know if there are any other similar examples out there and if this block indicates that there was a different assignment of sequence numbers used prior to 19 Sept,1968.

Thanks
Terry

Another example of a 3892657 block with a square-head 1/8" NPT plug, assembly date stamp including a "V" and a sequential number in the 50000-79999 range.

Being a CE block, it doesn’t make a difference whether it was Tonawanda or Flint.

But the pipe plug and the V prove it’s a Flint block.

By the way, CE blocks started September of 1967 for the 68 model year.

10 7 V means October 1967, Flint.

I do not know why it has a Tonawanda sequence number - but it’s fine to use.
